Second year in ADAC GT Masters for Markus Pommer: Trainee driver at wheel of Audi R8 prepared by Aust Motorsport

After a year’s ‘apprenticeship’ in the ADAC GT Masters, Markus Pommer intends to tackle a second season in the Super Sports Car League. His team, Aust Motorsport, have been very busy, preparing for the new season which kicks off in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, 28th – 30th April. SPORT1will broadcast all races live and in full.

Pommer, who switched to GT racing in 2016 after a great deal of success in the Formel ADAC, Formula 3 and Formula 2, will line up in an Audi R8 fielded by Aust Motorsport. The 26-year-old is particularly pleased with the fact that he will again be driving a GT3 sports car produced by the brand with the four rings – his family has a special relationship with Audi: “We live in Neckarsulm, where the Audi R8 is built. We are almost all big fans of Audi in our family and even have a couple of Audis. The R8 is a proper racing car with a mid-mounted engine, and I really like it, given my background in single-seater racing. The decision to line up in an R8 was, therefore, a no-brainer.”

Pommer contested the races at the Nürburgring and Zandvoort for Aust Motorsport in 2016. After doing very well, the 26-year-old came to the conclusion that he wanted to contest a complete season for the outfit this year. “I felt at ease straightaway in the team last year. We soon became friends, and the car was extremely fast. I drove at the Nürburgring without having done any testing beforehand. Nevertheless, we finished sixth in the first race and were also well up the field in Zandvoort – until we got a time penalty!”

And so, Pommer is feeling pretty confident about the upcoming season: “The field is extremely strong, but our team boss, Frank Aust, has worked hard over the winter, making a lot of technical changes, and has expanded his team. We should, therefore, be stronger than ever in 2016, plus, I have a very quick and experienced team mate in Pierre Kaffer. He knows the Audi like the back of his hand and has already achieved a lot in his career.”
