Day 1 of the two-day official ADAC GT Masters tests at Motorsport Arena was dominated by cars sporting the Lamborghini badge. The time set in the morning session by works driver Mirko Bortolotti of Team ORANGE1 by GRT Grasser was also the fastest of the day. His 1:23.592-minute lap remained unbeaten in the two subsequent sessions. Bortolotti's new team-mate, Andrea Caldarelli, posted the fastest lap of the second session with a time of 1:23.742 minutes.
Fellow GRT Grasser Racing Lamborghini drivers Christian Engelhart and Rolf Ineichen were close behind on the time sheets. The duo also posted their best lap during the morning session, just 0.054 seconds adrift of Bortolotti.
Third fastest on Monday were ex-champion Kelvin van der Linde and his brother Sheldon in the best of the Montaplast by Land-Motorsport Audi R8 LMSs. The South Africans waited until the third and final session before posting a respectable time of 1:23.682 minutes. "That was a very interesting day," said Kelvin van der Linde. "We experimented with the Pirelli tyres and simulated qualifying laps. It's been a good start to life with my new team in the ADAC GT Masters, although I already know the mechanics and engineers from competing in the 24 Hours of Daytona in January. It was very cold this morning, so it was difficult at first to find a suitable setup. But we got there in the end. As the afternoon got warmer, we had to make changes to the car and tweak the tuning."
Fourth fastest on the first day with a time of 1:23.947 minutes were Sebastian Asch and Luca Stolz in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 entered by Team Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing. Rounding off the Top Five were Frédéric Vervisch and Nikolaj Rogivue in the best of the Aust Motorsport Audis with a time of 1:24.008 minutes.
The field gradually closed up as the day went on. In the final session held in the second part of the afternoon, the first 15 cars were all within one second, and the gap between the fastest and slowest of the 35 cars in the line-up was less than 2.5 seconds.
