ADAC GT Masters·7.9.2018

Comments after free practice: The drivers sum up Friday's action at the Sachsenring

Nicolai Sylvest (Team Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing, Mercedes-AMG GT3): "I first competed here three years ago and immediately fell in love with the track. It really suits me. I especially like the changes in elevation and the fast sections. I felt comfortable here right from the start today, and the evidence for that is there in the lap times. I hope we can continue like this tomorrow. Maybe we'll find an extra one or two tenths of a second ahead of qualifying. Our objective is a place in the Top Ten."

Sheldon van der Linde (Montaplast by Land-Motorsport, Audi R8 LMS): "The day didn't get off to the best of starts. We weren't quite as fast as we had expected initially, so we then worked on the setup. With new tyres, the car was good. It's looking like we should be among the Top Five fastest. Our main objective is to get among the Top Four in the standings. Right now, we are seventh. We aim to score a lot of points, and to do this, we have to qualify very near the front. That's because overtaking is very difficult here. I drove my first GT3 race here in 2017 sharing an Aust Audi with my brother. I also competed in the ADAC TCR Germany. This time, it's less stressful and easier because I'm familiar with driving a GT3 car, specifically the R8 LMS, on this track."

Mathieu Jaminet (Precote Herberth Motorsport, Porsche 911 GT3 R): "We had a solid first day with two Top Six times in free practice. It's been one of the best Fridays this season. The car feels pretty good. The team have done a great job, and we've been gradually improving."

Maro Engel (AutoArenA Motorsport, Mercedes-AMG GT3): "That was a good day today. We've managed to put in a lot of laps and shown that we are competitive. I think we have a package that's very suitable in terms of setup. As usual in the ADAC GT Masters, it will be important to get an unobstructed lap in qualifying tomorrow. We're hoping for a good grid position so we can really go on the attack in the first race."

Rahel Frey (YACO Racing, Audi R8 LMS): "That was a very instructive day, and we can be satisfied. Philip was very quick today - in both the wet and dry. I think we're well prepared."

Markus Winkelhock (BWT Mücke Motorsport, Audi R8 LMS): "Today was OK. We didn't finish all that far up the overall timesheets, but we didn't go out on fresh tyres. I think we're quite well placed here. The car was quite good last year too, so I hope we can show its real performance tomorrow on fresh tyres. It's always difficult to say how much difference that makes, but I'm optimistic. It will be interesting to see how qualifying goes, because it's not easy at the moment to estimate the overall level of performance."

Daniel Keilwitz (Callaway Competition, Corvette GT3-R): "As expected, the track is not an easy one for us. We've got a lot of work to do on the car. Balance is actually quite good, but we're a bit too slow at the moment. We'll just have to wait until qualifying when we bolt on fresh tyres and can see how fast the competition really is."
