ADAC GT Masters·5.8.2018

First pole for Frank Stippler and Team ISR: Audi driver quickest in second qualifying at Nürburgring

The second qualifying session of the Super Sports Car League at the circuit in the Eifel proved to be extremely exciting, as it was nip and tuck in the closing minutes of the race against the clock. Audi driver Frank Stippler finished up front in the end. The Team ISR driver had already been fastest a couple of times previously during the session but was displaced from the top spot yet again. However, the local favourite from nearby Bad Münstereifel went into P1 just before the end of the quali with a time of 1:25.681 minutes to secure for himself and the team their maiden pole position in the ADAC GT Masters.

"What a terrific result!" said Stippler, who shares the drive in the Audi R8 LMS with Filip Salaquarda. "I've been back in Germany only since last season after many years competing at an international level and have had to get used to not having tyre covers again. Everything in the ADAC GT Masters is new to the team as well this year, but we've made steady progress and are doing better all the time. As for me personally, it helped that I did some tyre testing here a few weeks ago. I hope we can repeat our performance in the race."

BWT Mücke Motorsport driver Markus Winkelhock in the Audi R8 LMS was beaten to pole position by only 0.082 seconds. The ex-Formula 1 driver and his partner, Mike David Ortmann, will be second on the grid for the start of the race (live on SPORT1 at 1:00 pm). "I'm quite satisfied," said Winkelhock. "The front row is a great position to be in at the start of the race. Maybe a little bit more might have been possible. The car certainly felt good. I hope the car's balance will stay the same later when it gets warmer."

Third place went to the winners of Saturday's race, Indy Dontje and Maximilian Buhk, who brought their Mercedes AMG GT3 home in front of their counterparts from Mann-Filter Team HTP Motorsport, Markus Pommer and Maximilian Götz. Two Audi teams share the third row with the driver pairings of Ricardo Feller and Christopher Haase, representing BWT Mücke Motorsport, and Aust Motorsport's Remo Lips plus Maximilian Hackländer, who qualified in the Top Ten for the first time this season.

The field was once again bunched very close together as was the case yesterday. The pole-sitter and the car in 30th place were covered by less than a second and the entire field of 35 vehicles finished within 1.3 seconds of one another.
