Mercedes-AMG driver Assenheimer is best Junior: Jan-Erik Slooten wins Pirelli Trophy class

Raffaelle Marciello, Assenheimer’s team-mate at AutoArenA Motorsport, started Sunday’s race from fifth place and held on there until the mandatory pit stop. Thanks to excellent timing, Assenheimer returned to the track in third place. Then, just a few laps later, he overtook the second-placed Porsche of Adrien de Leener to secure the team’s best result of the campaign so far. It was also enough for the 26-year-old to win the Junior class for the first time this season.

“That was a brilliant job from the whole team today,” said a delighted Assenheimer. “Raffaele drove a great first stint, especially the way he looked after the tyres. He knew that he wasn’t going to get past Maximilian Götz and consequently didn’t push unnecessarily. At the pit stop, he had a good inlap and I got a good outlap. When the tyres were up to temperature, I attacked. The highlight for me, of course, was the overtaking manoeuvre on the Porsche for P2. It was a very fair fight.”

Second-best Junior on the day and fifth in the general classification was Indy Dontje of the Mann-Filter HTP Motorsport in another Mercedes-AMG. The local favourite partnered by Maxi Buhk had hoped for more from the race after starting from the front row and was unsurprisingly disappointed. Third place went to Ricardo Feller, the youngest entrant in the field. The 18-year-old and BWT Mücke Motorsport partner Christopher Haase were sixth in the general classification and best of the Audi contingent.

Jan-Erik Slooten won the Pirelli Trophy classification for the second time this season. The Porsche man, who drives for IronForce by RING POLICE, took the race lead in the amateur class after the driver change and defended it comfortably to the finish.

“This is definitely a result that we can live with,” said the 33-year-old. “I emerged after the driver change and was then behind a Land Audi for most of the second stint. Later on, I had a scrap with a BMW and a Mercedes-AMG. I was able to leave the BMW behind me, but not the Mercedes. But I think we can feel quite satisfied with today.”
