After achieving success in formula racing, the 21-year-old made his GT racing debut last year and immediately won the title in the Special Touring Car Trophy. Tunjo is now joining the ADAC GT Masters to race with Phoenix Racing, who are back with the series this year. “My goal for 2018 was to compete in one of the strongest GT series,” said the South American. “I lined up several times in the STT within the framework of the ADAC GT Masters programme and saw how strong the series is. I can learn a lot there and there are plenty of high-calibre drivers in the field.”
He will be the first Colombian ever to race in the Super Sports Car League. “That’s something I can be quite proud of,” said Tunjo. “I hope I can raise the profile of the ADAC GT Masters back home in Colombia by achieving good results. I’m sure that many fans will follow the races as live stream.”
Tunjo is looking forward to the Audi R8 LMS: “It will be a big change for me, since I drove a front-engined Mercedes-AMG in 2017 and the Audi is mid-engined. The R8 has proved to be a very competitive car in recent years, and Phoenix Racing really know the Audi inside out. I can’t wait for the test drives to get underway.”
Tunjo feels very optimistic about his debut season in the ADAC GT Masters: “Of course, the series is completely uncharted territory for me, but I know all the tracks and have a great team behind me. I aim to be a front-runner in all the races. It would be terrific if we can secure a win. We definitely have a great package.”
Tunjo will live in Adenau near Phoenix team headquarters in Meuspath during the season. “I will also try to learn German, even if it’s quite difficult. I’ve only learned a couple of words so far. I’ll fly back to Colombia in between to work with my sponsors and spend time with my family if there are some longish breaks in the calendar.”
It’s not yet been decided who will partner Tunjo. “That will be revealed in the next few weeks,” said the Colombian. Phoenix have already signed someone else for one of its two Audi R8 LMS racing cars, British driver Philip Ellis, last year’s winner of the Audi Sport TT Cup.
