Not a lot happened for quite some time in the second qualifying session, as most drivers were waiting for the track to warm up and provide more grip. It was only in the in the last ten minutes or so that they went out to set their flying laps. There was also a short break to recover Thomas Preining's stricken Porsche about five minutes before the end of the session that added to the drama. Around two-thirds of the field then had to put all their eggs in one basket and quickly try to post a hot lap.
The two Audi R8 LMS cars from Montaplast by Land-Motorsport were the most successful. First, Dries Vanthoor took the lead on the timesheet with a time of 1:36.506 minutes, but a short time later, the Belgian driver's best time was taken by team-mate, Christopher Mies, in the sister car. Mies, who shares the Audi with Max Hofer, current leader in the Pirelli Junior classification, achieved a best time of 1:36.348 minutes and thus took his fifth pole position in the ADAC GT Masters.
"That was an excellent qualifying by the team," said Mies, summing up. "It was long overdue, because we've worked very hard for this success, but for some reason, things never went quite right in qualifying. Now we've shaken off the bad luck and it's all come together. I'm mega happy. Securing pole position in the ADAC GT Getting Masters is never easy."
Mercedes AMG driver Philip Ellis qualified in third place behind Land's two cars. "I'm very pleased," said the British driver, who shares the car with Fabian Vettel. "The result is a little bit surprising, as we've not had much driving time apart from in the first race where conditions were different again. I had to abort my first lap because of the red flags. After the restart, I had only one chance to post a hot lap. The first corner was not all that brilliant, but the car ran great over the final part. In the race, it's going to be important to survive the jockeying for position at the start, because that's when things can get very tight. I want to hand over the car to Fabian in good shape so that he too can push hard, and then we'll have to see where we end up."
Saturday's winners, Christian Engelhart and Mirko Bortolotti, secured fourth place in the best-placed Lamborghini Huracán GT3 from Orange1 by GRT Grasser followed by team-mates, Franck Perera and Rolf Ineichen.
