ADAC GT Masters·13.9.2019

Comments from the Hockenheimring paddock: Friday's action at Hockenheim from a driver perspective

Christopher Mies (30, GER, Montaplast by Land-Motorsport): "A good first day, though it has to be said that we were setting our times on new tyres. But some of the teams were also trying out their fresh tyres, while others were planning to do this in the second practice session and were prevented from doing this by the red flag. But anyway, it’s obviously nice to have clocked the best time of the day. The car is running well. Free practice has once again shown just how tight it’s going to be tomorrow and on Sunday. The qualifying margin will again be in the thousandths. It’s going to be tense."

Patric Niederhauser (27, CH, HCB-Rutronik Racing): "It’s been a good day for us today. We were among the front-runners in both sessions. We were able to get through the whole of our programme, and we’re feeling confident about tomorrow. Everything is going as planned. So far, we have done our homework. Still, it’s hard to tell where we are compared to the competition. We don’t know exactly what our opponents are capable of. I expect the Corvette to be much better tomorrow than it’s been today."

Markus Pommer (28, GER, Callaway Competition): "It’s difficult for me to say where we stand, because other teams have already set their times on new tyres. With the conditions prevailing today, we didn’t get round to fitting new tyres. Compared to yesterday, though, we’ve been able to improve the car. It is already better on used tyres, so let’s see how it performs on new ones. I’ve also learned something about handling the car today. Everything should go well. The Corvette is good all round, and the team knows the track, so I’m feeling confident."

Thomas Preining (21, AUT, Precote Herberth Motorsport): "The second session was really good. We only really got going then, because we had had problems with the car in the first practice session. I think we’re OK with the car, even though there is room for improvement. But basically we are well on the way to where we want to be."

Gosia Rdest (26, PL, Aust Motorsport): "Today has been a bit of a roller-coaster. FP1 was fine. Unfortunately, we were not able to go out on track for second practice. We had to give it a miss because of drive-shaft problems, but the Aust crew are doing their best to fix it and get the car ready for Saturday. I hope I can have a better showing on the racetrack tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to qualifying."

Fabian Vettel (20, GER, Mann-Filter Team HTP): "Luckily, we prepared well for the track yesterday in testing, so we were able to concentrate on the main thing today, on being quick. We had to struggle a bit out on track because of a lack of grip, but every team has the same problem. We made good progress and learned a lot. Now we have to make sure to pull everything together over a lap tomorrow. Unfortunately, I got a penalty, because I briefly lost focus. I’ve been dropped three places down the grid for driving too fast under the red flag, which makes me all the more determined to do well in qualifying."

Marco Seefried (SSR Performance, Porsche 911 GT3 R): "We’re actually more than satisfied. We had a good showing, which is a bit more than you might expect as a new team. We look forward now to what lies ahead with confidence, and we’re in good spirits."

Marvin Dienst (Schütz Motorsport, Mercedes-AMG GT3): "We’re pleased with our results. Of course, it’s always a bit tricky to get a handle on Friday’s proceedings, but we’ll see where we actually stand tomorrow in the first qualifying session. I’m looking forward to my home fixture. I know the track well, and many friends and acquaintances will be coming along to watch. Obviously, you don’t want to disappoint, and maybe there’s a bit more pressure on you in qualifying. Still, it’s a good sort of pressure. I’m double-booked again and will also be contesting ADAC GT4 Germany. Things went well for us there too."
