Ferrari launch 488 GT3 Evo 2020: Second generation Ferrari GT3

There was a ‘soft’ update last year, but now, there’s an Evo version. Ferrari unveiled the 488 GT3 Evo 2020 as part of Ferrari Finali Mondiali on Saturday at Mugello. The GT3 has been given a complete makeover by Ferrari’s engineers, who were tasked with improving aerodynamics, driving dynamics, ergonomics, safety and reliability for the upcoming season.

As regards aerodynamics, Ferrari have focused primarily on the front end. No less than 18,000 hours of calculations and CFD simulations, followed by wind tunnel tests, went into restyling the front end, resulting in a new front apron with reduced area to the sections beneath the headlamps. As a result, Ferrari have been able to add two flicks laterally to increase front-end downforce. The air outlets on the front wheel arches have been enlarged and the front parts of the doors have been reworked in order to optimise air-flow around the vehicle.

Driving dynamics have undergone a major update. The wheelbase has been lengthened with the aim of optimising and reducing tyre wear and is now the same as that of the GTE version of the 488. The wheelbases are identical, making it easier for customer teams to swap between GT3 and GTE models. The 488 can be converted in either direction.

Ferrari have reduced the weight of the 488 GT3, making it possible for teams to add or remove weights in order to conform with the minimum weights required by various vehicle rating categories.

The V8 bi-turbo engine remains unchanged but has new electronics. Traction control and ABS have also been revised.

Ferrari have also done something to improve safety. Working with Sabelt, a new, lighter but more rigid seat has been developed. A new endurance racing package is also now available as an option for teams who use their 488 GT3s not just for sprint races.

All previously built 488 GT3s can be upgraded to the latest specification. Ferrari have not yet announced any prices for the new 488 GT3 Evo 2020 or for the upgrade package.
