Hofer and Audi R8 LMS co-driver Christopher Mies started from sixth. Taking the first stint, Hofer held on to the position until the mandatory pit stop. His partner Christopher Mies returned to the track in third place and grabbed the runner-up spot six laps before the finish. For Hofer it was win number three in the Pirelli Junior classification, a result that was enough to take him to the top of the standings in the category for drivers aged under 25.
"Hockenheim was a setback, but today we've been able to turn around the bad luck that we had there," said Hofer afterwards. "The extremely good stint put in by Christopher [Mies] took us from sixth on the grid to second place and ultimately also to a win in the Pirelli Junior classification. I'm feeling sorry for Ricardo [Feller] because he was really unlucky today and dropped some vital points. But that's motor racing - today was our day!"
And it was Feller, Hofer's Montaplast by Land Motorsport team-mate, whom he ousted at the top. Feller had started the day as championship leader but was unable to finish any higher than sixth in class, a result that leaves him trailing the Austrian by four points. "The qualifying session was far from ideal, as I had some traffic on my fast laps towards the end," said Feller. "The start was a bit chaotic, but we came through it OK. In the race, I was behind the championship-winning car for a long time and could have gone a bit faster, but I didn't want to take any chances. Unfortunately, we dropped out of the Top Ten at the end. We need to look into the reasons for that. Tomorrow, I'll be doing everything I can to turn the situation around again."
Second-best Junior on Saturday was Mick Wishofer, who occupied the runner-up spot for much of his stint. He and partner Kelvin Snoeks in the Mercedes AMG fielded by Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing eventually finished third to make a maiden podium appearance in the ADAC GT Masters. Third place in the Junior class went to Mike David Ortmann in the Audi of BWT Mücke Motorsport.
Claiming victory in the Pirelli Trophy for the eighth time in the current campaign was Sven Barth. Having already clinched the championship for amateur drivers on the previous outing, the Corvette driver and his partner David Jahn had to work hard for the win this time. Jahn was obliged to take evasive action through the gravel on the first corner and fell back to last but one. After that, however, the two RWT Racing drivers mounted a determined charge through the field which took them across the finish line in seventh place overall.
Barth sums up: "David did a superb job in qualifying. We hadn't expected to be starting from fourth. We obviously had a lot of bad luck at the start. I think Dennis Marschall had a minor contact and sent us off into the gravel. That was certainly not his intention. It was all a bit too tight, and one of the drivers was probably a bit too optimistic on the brakes. After that, we thought it was all over, but our car was really good in the race. David was able to gain a lot of places. I also managed to move up a few positions after the driver handover. As a result, we took seventh place, which was obviously just amazing. That was an absolutely brilliant race for us!"
