ADAC GT Masters·14.1.2019

Land Motorsport: In title contention in third year: Race team are once again most successful Audi crew in 2018

The German outfit remained loyal to the Audi brand and deployed two R8 LMS cars once more in the Super Sports Car League. However, there were no less than three new faces in the team for the start of the season, as former champion, Christopher Mies, got a new team-mate, Belgian driver Alessio Picariello, while brothers Kelvin and Sheldon van der Linde shared the drive in the sister car. The two South Africans kept the fight for the title open until the last race of the season at Hockenheim, missing out by just one point in the end. "So the balance sheet looks pretty good for us," said Wolfgang Land. "This was our third year in the ADAC GT Masters, and we were in title contention for the third time in a row. Not many other teams have managed to achieve that feat, so we can be proud."

Christian Land was particularly pleased with the strong charge that Sheldon and Kelvin van der Linde made during the season: "They both did an excellent job. Unfortunately, we struggled a bit at the start of the year, because the tracks didn't really suit us, but things subsequently went much better. The highlights for us were the two race weekends at the Sachsenring and at Hockenheim, for sure! Kelvin and Sheldon came away with a good haul of points in the fight for the title by taking their first win of the season and second place at the Sachsenring and then kept the title fight on the boil until the very last lap in the finale at Hockenheim with Sunday's win."

The team's sister car, though, was beset by setbacks. Its best result was P3 at Zandvoort. While Christopher Mies was a regular in car #29 for the entire season, he had a number of different team-mates - Alessio Picariello, Jake Dennis and Alex Riberas. "Christopher and Co were extremely unlucky this year. Retirements and results that were not their fault frequently cost us valuable points," said Wolfgang Land while Christian Land told us: "Jake Dennis was very fast but was unfamiliar with some of the tracks and needed to learn them first. Also, he had to get accustomed to driving the Audi. The ADAC GT Masters is so hard fought that if you lose two or three tenths of a second in qualifying, you have to start well down the grid, and then it's not so easy to finish in the points. This GT3 series has become one of the most professional in the world in recent years, and everything has to be just right if you want to compete up front."

Montaplast by Land-Motorsport intend to attack again in 2019 and fight for the title once more. "Of course, we're already planning the season ahead," said Wolfgang Land. "But we can't give you any details yet."
