ADAC GT Masters·25.7.2019

Markus Pommer: Now's the time to really push: In second place, ready to seize his chance: Corvette driver has eyes fixed firmly on title

You have won three of the first six races. No regrets then about moving to Callaway, I don't suppose?

No, none at all, this season is going very well for us. I never expected to promptly go out and win the first race at Oschersleben. As far as that goes, we're well on target. The car is excellent, and I get on extremely well with my team-mate, Marvin Kirchhöfer, and everyone in the outfit.

It's a well-known fact that the first few circuits on this season's calendar, especially Autodrom Most and the Red Bull Ring, really suit the Corvette. But three wins must have come as a surprise.

Yeah, before the start of the season, nobody would ever have expected that we would win three out of six races. The competition is tough. The field is very evenly matched. When you make a small mistake, you can often see what a difference just a tenth of a second in qualifying means in the race itself. Oschersleben was a big surprise for us. Actually, the track is not really suited to the Corvette, but we just had a good race after securing a great position on the grid. We benefited from the rain towards the end when some teams spun off. Marvin managed to keep the car on track. I was impressed. Everyone in the team works hard to make such successes possible.

You had to get used to the Corvette initially, no doubt. How well do you now know your car? Might more be possible as the season progresses?

I think I know the car quite well by now. The basics are already there. Still, you always want to find more and more pace. The longer I drive the car, for a full season or longer, the more I'll be able to discover little tricks to conjure up the last couple of tenths of a second or so.

Tell us in a couple of sentences what makes Team Callaway so successful?

The team led by its founders, Ernst Wöhr, Giovanni Ciccone and Team Principal, Mike Gramke, have worked together for a very long time as an outfit, and consequently, have built up enormous amount of trust in one another. This loyalty is important. You can soon see too that they've amassed a wealth of experience in the ADAC GT Masters over the years. They just know each other very well. Such experience is a big advantage compared to the many new teams in the series. We are a small outfit unable maybe to call on big financial resources, but on the other hand, we work very passionately towards achieving success. Another advantage with Callaway from my perspective is the location. We all come from the Heilbronn area, which makes things a lot easier. Also, the team developed the Corvette C7 GT3-R in-house and know the car inside out.

You just mentioned the team's location. I would imagine you probably often call in to see them?

Yeah, for sure! The short distances between places are ideal, if, for example, a pre-event is taking place in the run-up to a race or something of that nature. It's a big advantage that we all come from the same place and speak the same local dialect. Also, we have the Hockenheimring on our doorstep for testing. It hardly gets any better.

What sets your team-mate, Marvin Kirchhöfer, apart from the rest?

We come from the same Formula 3 team, went to the same school. He's been driving the Corvette for a year longer than me and gave me some pointers about what to look out for initially. We work well together and are well suited - both as people and as drivers. What sets him apart from the rest is that he's always quick. Marvin does really well in qualifying and races. His results speak for themselves.

You have already said that the next few circuits won't really suit you, but still, how do you think you will do, for example, at the upcoming race weekend in Zandvoort (9th-11th August)?

Well, last year at Zandvoort was actually not all that good, but let's see if we can't do better this time around. All things considered, we're still aiming for a place in the Top Ten. We want to finish as far forward as possible. If we're lucky and don't make mistakes, then anything is possible in the ADAC GT Masters.

And finally, tell us in a few words about the fight for the title. How do you expect to do?

We said at the outset that we want to be title contenders. That's our goal. The team have already proven that they can win titles. Marvin and I have also both been in title contention until the very end before. After three wins, I'd say now's the time to really push.
