As the youngest driver in the field, 19-year-old Weerts had already demonstrated during this season's first two race weekends that the second day usually goes well for him. At the Lausitzring, he went out and promptly secured an overall win and finished runner-up on Sunday at the Nürburgring. Both times, he also triumphed in the Junior class of the Super Sports Car League and did the same again today at the Sachsenring. Team WRT partner Dries Vanthoor started the race in ninth place and had improved to sixth as the time to change drivers arrived. Weerts emerged back on track in third place thanks to good pit-stop timing. And then after crossing the line, he was bumped up into second place because of a retrospective penalty handed to the Lamborghini originally in P1.
"Certainly, it was not an easy race for us, as we've had problems with the car's balance all weekend, but we were ultimately successful," said Weerts. "Dries [Vanthoor] and the team did a great job and we were able to keep our rivals behind us in the race. The Corvette was simply too fast on the straights, though, and anyway, opportunities to overtake are very limited at the Sachsenring. Today went well for us, and we will obviously continue to do our best in the future."
Henric Skoog took second place in the Pirelli Junior classification, driving Schubert Motorsport's BMW M6 GT3. Dennis Marschall and Carrie Schreiner in the Rutronik Racing Audi also made it onto the podium after Marschall had clinched his second pole position of the season in qualifying.
Victory in the Pirelli Trophy classification for amateur drivers also went to Team WRT, as Swiss driver Rolf Ineichen managed to beat off competition from fellow Audi drivers, Elia Erhart and Filip Salaquarda.
