His team-mate, Dries Vanthoor, had already secured a good starting position by qualifying second on the grid. Vanthoor then finally handed over to Weerts lying in fourth towards the middle of the race. The young Belgian benefited from penalties incurred by two competitors in front of him, and so, booked P2 overall in the end, giving him victory in the Pirelli Junior class.
"I had a tough stint," said Weerts. "We just didn't have the pace today. We fell back to fifth in all the action at the start but pitted at the right time and were able to secure a decent finish. I struggled a bit with the car at times, but despite everything, we were able to get the most out of today. So all in all, I'm very happy!"
Tim Zimmermann was the second-best Junior this time after finishing ninth overall in the Lamborghini fielded by GRT Grasser Racing Team. Third place in the Junior stakes went to Saturday's winner, Mick Wishofer from Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing team, in a Mercedes-AMG.
However, Porsche driver Jannes Fittje (Küs Team75 Bernhard) still leads the Pirelli Junior classification. He originally booked the top spot in the classification but dropped out of the reckoning after being handed a 30-second penalty post-race.
Switzerland's Rolf Ineichen won the Pirelli Trophy classification. Together with Team WRT partner Mirko Bortolotti, he crossed the finish line in fourth place overall in the Audi, achieving the best result so far by the two former Lamborghini drivers. Elia Erhart (EFP Car Collection by Tece), also in an Audi, booked third place today but still has the most points in the classification for amateur drivers.
