ADAC GT Masters·15.8.2020

Comments after Race 1 at the Nürburgring: Observations from the paddock on Saturday's contest in the Eifel.

Michael Ammermüller (SSR Performance, Porsche 911 GT3 R, race winner): "It was important to start from pole position and to exploit that to the full. We managed to do this and retained the lead. The team gave us a perfect car, and we avoided making any mistakes."

Christian Engelhart (SSR Performance, Porsche 911 GT3 R, race winner): "Michael already put in a magnificent performance in qualifying. The race was not as straightforward as it may have looked. The Mercedes put us under constant pressure from behind. I didn't get any opportunity to ease off and had to keep pushing all the time. I couldn't afford to make any mistakes. While I was following the safety car, I was getting a lot of pickup, but at the restart I managed a very good lap. I was very happy about that. But I was even happier when the race was over."

Maro Engel (Toksport WRT, Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, overall P2): "I was trying to push, but it was difficult with the 20 kilos of additional weight resulting from the Lausitzring. It was clear that I couldn't pass without a mistake. Consequently, the race was relatively uneventful. In any case, I had plenty of distance on the pursuing cars. We pitted early to see if that would enable us to get past. Our stop was a bit faster, but it still wasn't enough."

Patric Niederhauser (Rutronik Racing, Audi R8 LMS, overall P3): "Unfortunately, I did not have the best of qualifying sessions. I had traffic, came up against a yellow flag and ultimately didn't manage a good lap. In the ADAC GT Masters, that means P7. The start was rather chaotic, with a quite a few bumps and scrapes. So to have actually finished third is mega. We knew that the Lamborghini would get a time penalty, but it kept attacking and enabled us to squeeze past the Porsche into third place. It was all quite emotional, because it brought us our first podium of the year."

Simona De Silvestro (Küs Team75 Bernhard, Porsche 911 GT3 R, overall P4): "All in all, it was a positive day. Klaus did a mega job in qualifying and put us in a great position. We were going well in the race but unfortunately lost a bit of time at the pit stop because we encountered a small problem. From Friday to today, we had changed quite a lot on the car, and it felt really good. The fact that I was able to mix it with the front-runners in only my third race is a boost to my confidence. Everything is still new for me. But it is really good working with Porsche, Timo (Bernhard) and Klaus (Graf). We are going in the right direction, and we intend to keep on improving."

Klaus Bachler (Küs Team75 Bernhard, Porsche 911 GT3 R, overall P4): "We only narrowly missed out on the podium, but in P4 we have a great result and we have scored some decent points. That's something we can build on. There are still a few small things we can optimise, but when you finish fourth in a championship as competitive as this one, you must be doing a lot of things right, and that was certainly the case today. I'm pleased about that. Now we're looking ahead so that we can develop step by step over the course of future races, starting tomorrow. For Simona, it was only her third race in this championship; I've been contesting the ADAC GT Masters a bit longer and I know that nothing can be taken for granted in the series. To be up there with the front-runners, you have to make sure that everything slots into place, and we managed that again today."

Mick Wishofer (Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, Team Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing, overall P5, winner in the Pirelli Junior class): "My start was quite good, and I handed the car over in fifth place. We then had an opportunity to make it onto the overall podium because we were faster than the Porsche in front of us. But the late safety car bunched the field up again. The Lamborghini cost us two places in the end. I'm happy about my maiden victory in the Pirelli Junior classification, but I'm also a bit disappointed because a podium finish in the general classification was a distinct possibility."

Carrie Schreiner (Rutronik Racing, Audi R8 LMS, overall P8, runner-up in Pirelli Junior classification): "I'm very pleased with the result. This is our second Pirelli Junior podium. Dennis drove a really good race and handed the car over to me in sixth place. I was able to go the pace quite well but picked up marbles during the safety car deployment. That's why I struggled a bit over the first few laps after the restart and lost position to Marciello and Müller. I was then able to pull away a little from the driver behind me."

David Jahn (Küs Team75 Bernhard, Porsche 911 GT3 R, overall P14): "We started out from 19th on the grid. Jannes did well on his first stint. His pace was good. I personally felt really comfortable in the car; I was able to match the others for speed and close the gap on the front-runners. Unfortunately, we lost a bit of time during the pit stop, so I had to make up for that first. Plus, two or three cars came out of the pits right in front of me, and I needed to overtake them. There was always plenty to do. I was then able to close down the gap again on an opponent. I had another hard-fought scrap practically on the limit towards the end. I'm not entirely satisfied with the result but am happy with the pace. We took points, which is something positive. We'll have to make sure tomorrow that we start from further up the grid. If we can do that, then we can compete up front, because our race pace is terrific."
