Comments on Race 2 at the Sachsenring: Observations from the paddock after Sunday's contest

Markus Pommer (Callaway Competition, Corvette C7 GT3-R), P1 overall: "At last, everything came together today. Although we were actually quite competitive in the season opener at the Lausitzring, we've had a lot of bad luck in the last few races, with often just small things going wrong. But today, we finally had luck on our side again. Jeffrey [Schmidt] had already laid the foundations for our good result in qualifying. The start went well for us too, although we actually thought that we would be at a disadvantage on the outside of the track. I was quicker than the Lamborghini at the beginning but was unable to get past. Towards the end, he was getting faster, and without the penalty, it would have been difficult for us to win."

Jeffrey Schmidt (Callaway Competition, Corvette C7 GT3-R), P1 overall: "A very good result, which is of course all the more gratifying, as we have had a tough season so far. As early as qualifying, everything was going in our favour - we were able to set a good lap time and book ourselves a position near the front of the grid. After a lot of work this weekend, our Corvette had excellent grip and balance, which was clearly the basis of our good performance, both in qualifying and later in the race."

Charles Weerts (Team WRT, Audi R8 LMS), P2 overall, winner in the Pirelli Junior classification: "It certainly wasn't an easy race for us, as we had been having constant problems with the balance of the car over the weekend, but in the end our hard work paid off. Dries [Vanthoor] and the team did a great job, making sure that we kept our opponents behind us in the race. The Corvette was simply too fast for them on the straights, and in any case, the Sachsenring offers hardly any opportunities for overtaking. Today went well for us, and we will of course continue to give our best in the future."

Dries Vanthoor (Team WRT, Audi R8 LMS), P2 overall: "The race weekend at Hockenheim was not an easy one for us, so we are all the more satisfied with the result today. On the first lap, the field was very tightly bunched. Unfortunately, that cost us a position, but were able to recover it during the race. At the end, we were obviously quite fortunate that a penalty was imposed on the Lamborghini which enabled us to move up to second place."

Patric Niederhauser (Rutronik Racing, Audi R8 LMS), P3 overall: "During the race, we didn't have quite as much pace as we would have liked. After the pit stop, I was battling for position with Max Hofer and Charles Weerts. Naturally, I was looking to exploit any mistakes that our opponents might make. Ultimately, we certainly benefited from the bad luck of others. All in all, we are feeling positive about the upcoming races and the way that the championship is shaping up. Admittedly, the Red Bull Ring is not a track that traditionally favours the Audi, but it is a great circuit that I'm looking forward to competing on. If we continue to work as we have done so far, I hope that we will be competitive on all of the remaining circuits on the calendar."

Kelvin van der Linde (Rutronik Racing, Audi R8 LMS), P3 overall: "We have had to put a lot of work into the cars here at Sachsenring as well, especially with the Audi having had a hard time yesterday. After last year, we had expected to be a bit stronger here. But we were still able to score some decent points. It's important that we continue to put in the work, because the retirement of the Toksport duo today showed that there's always something that may go wrong. It's only with consistently good results that we have the chance to maintain our lead in the overall standings."

Philip Ellis (Knaus-Team HTP-Winward, Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo), P5 overall: "That was a big step forward. The pace was really good. Of course, we struggle a bit in the slow, long corners of the first sector, but we are able to make use of the good downforce of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the fast corners. However, those are the parts of the track where it's more difficult to drive close behind an opponent, so I was unable to use the superior speed to get past the cars in front. But because of the early stop we gained one place, and then we managed to pressure the Audi into making a mistake. From 12th on the grid to fifth - we can be very satisfied with that. We just have to perfect our qualifying and race technique, then we'll be there!"

Jannes Fittje (Küs Team75 Bernhard, Porsche 911 GT3), P14 overall, P5 in the Pirelli Junior classification: "David Jahn did a great job and handed over the car to me in P11. Unfortunately, I lost two places at the pit lane exit where it was very tight. After that, I made another mistake in turn eight and lost another position. I had quite a hard time in my stint, which is something I'll just have to put down to experience. The whole weekend has been jinxed. We have to reset now and prepare to go on the attack again next time."

Simona De Silvestro (Küs Team75 Bernhard, Porsche 911 GT3), DNF: "P22 in qualifying was of course not optimal, but at least I'm narrowing the gap on David. We're getting there slowly, and we need to keep working at it in the next few races. I had a good start and then a good run. The chaotic conditions ahead of us helped a bit, and the car felt good too. I handed over to Klaus in P14, and he was doing well - he was already up to tenth when the incident happened. It's a pity, because we could comfortably have finished in the Top Ten. Anyway, we're looking to the future, and we'll keep fighting."

Klaus Bachler (Küs Team75 Bernhard, Porsche 911 GT3), DNF: "Simona had a very good start and advanced to 14th place. I then took over the car - it was very good, and I was already in tenth place. After the safety car went back in, I pulled out to overtake a Mercedes, but unfortunately didn't quite get past it, so we went through the corner two abreast. My car took a hit and the steering broke. Such a pity, because the speed was really good, and we could have scored some respectable points. I feel sorry for the team; I was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
