The qualifying session for Sunday’s ADAC GT Masters race at Hockenheim ended with a maiden pole. Dutchman Steijn Schothorst in a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo booked the foremost grid position in the Super Sports Car League for the first time, thereby earning himself the Pirelli Pole Position Award. As a reward, the 25-year-old received an exclusive pair of skis from Luca Tedeschi, Head of Marketing Car at Pirelli Germany. It was also the first pole of the season for a Lamborghini.
Like almost all the other drivers in the field, Schothorst clocked his best laps in the final minutes of qualifying. He actually set three successive times, all of which would have been enough for the pole position – 1:38.410 minutes, 1:38.267 minutes and 1,38.193 minutes. This was yet further evidence of the Lamborghini man’s strong form at Hockenheim: he had already set the fastest lap in Saturday’s race and had made his first ever ADAC GT Masters podium appearance for a third-place finish with partner Tim Zimmermann.
“I am really pleased,” said Schothorst. “Getting a first pole position in the ADAC GT Masters is something very special. We were already very fast in yesterday’s race, and I am delighted that we were able to reproduce this speed today in qualifying. The team have done a great job in giving me the best car. In the race itself, a good start is going to be absolutely vital. The distance to Turn 2 is very long, and a lot can happen in between. If we get past there OK, we’ll obviously be looking for the win.”
Second place on the grid with a time of 1:38.411 minutes went to Mirko Bortolotti (Team WRT) who shares an Audi with Rolf Ineichen. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo of Maximilian Götz and Indy Dontje followed in third place in a time of 1:38.520 mins. Christopher Haase and Max Hofer in the best of the Montaplast by Land Motorsport Audi R8 LMSs will start from fourth. David Jahn and Jannes Fittje of Küs Team75 Bernhard also made it into the Top Five in the fastest Porsche of the morning.
The winners of Saturday’s race and new leaders in the championship standings, Michael Ammermüller and Christian Engelhart, could only qualify in 20th place this time.
