Niederhauser lays down marker of intent: Audi driver quickest on Friday at Oschersleben

Swiss driver Niederhauser, who travels to Oschersleben as overall championship leader along with his partner Kelvin van der Linde, set the best lap time in FP2 on Friday with a 1:23.659. The afternoon session took place in dry conditions unlike in the morning. As a result, Niederhauser is all set for qualifying on Saturday morning.

"This Friday was special, because it was wet this morning," said Niederhauser. "Nobody expected that, which is why we postponed a lot of what we intended to do in first practice to the second session. Still, it was a successful dress rehearsal for qualifying. We were able to collect some important data for Saturday. The goal is to be the fastest tomorrow, because lining up as far forward as possible will be paramount in view of our grid penalty. Qualifying will be tricky, for sure. Traffic always plays an important role in the qualis and hitting the right operating window with the tyres in the cold temperatures won't be easy either, so everything will have to be just right over the two hot laps that the tyres are good for."

Philip Ellis and Raffaele Marciello (Knaus-Team HTP-Winward Motorsport) took second place by the smallest possible margin. At the wheel of the fastest Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, they were a mere thousandth of a second down on the time to beat. Third place went to another Audi R8 LMS, driven by Rolf Ineichen and Mirko Bortolotti (Team WRT). Team WRT's duo were just 22 thousandths of a second slower than Niederhauser. Michael Ammermüller and Christian Engelhart (SSR Performance), who are third in the standings, came fourth in their Porsche 911 GT3 R, as they had done earlier this morning. Fifth place went to Indy Dontje and Maximilian Götz in the Mercedes-AMG prepared by Mann-Filter-Team HTP-Winward Motorsport.

Currently second in the standings, Robert Renauer (Precote Herberth Motorsport), who is sharing the Porsche with works driver Mathieu Jaminet in the finale, booked P8. Maro Engel and Luca Stolz are fourth overall and also still hope to lift the title. They finished 13th. No less than 25 of the 30 vehicles in the line-up were covered by one second.
