In contrast to Saturday, the track was completely dry for Q2 but temperatures were around freezing. All drivers had to post more laps than usual in order to get tyres up to temperature in the chilly conditions. As a consequence, it was nip and tuck during the closing stages as the lead kept changing hands. Tim Zimmermann finally secured his first Pirelli Pole Position Award at the very last second with a time of 1:28.829 minutes and will thus start this special, 200th anniversary ADAC GT Masters race from the very front of the grid. He also received a pair of exclusive Pirelli skis in recognition of his achievement. With his best time, the German again showed that GRT Grasser Racing are at the top of their game in their home fixture after Zimmermann’s partner Steijn Schothorst had secured pole position on Saturday.
„It’s just incredible!“ said Zimmermann. „I never expected to take pole in my first season in the ADAC GT Masters. The team are doing a terrific job and the car is fantastic. It will definitely not be an easy race, though, because we’ll have the super-quick BMWs behind us once more, and they are definitely a little bit faster along the straights. My main objective is to keep them to our rear. We’re learning with every race. I’m going to take another look at the start of yesterday’s round to see what I can do to stay in front. If I can find something to our advantage, then that should give me confidence, because our race pace yesterday was excellent.“
After coming third in Race 1 with his team-mate Erik Johansson, BMW works driver Jens Klingmann (MRS GT-Racing) qualified second behind Zimmermann with a deficit of a mere 0.024 seconds. Maro Engel and Luca Stolz (Toksport WRT) in the best-placed Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo came next, eight thousandths of a second further down the timesheets. The two Audi R8 LMS supercars from Rutronik Racing followed in fourth and fifth. Dennis Marschall, who shares the drive with Carrie Schreiner, was slightly faster than team-mate Kelvin van der Linde, who currently heads the standings table along with his partner, Patric Niederhauser.
26 vehicles were covered by just one second in qualifying for this 200th ADAC GT Masters race, demonstrating once again just how competitive the field in the Super Sports Car League has become. The race will start at 13.05 CEST with live broadcasting from SPORT1.
