Stefan Mücke is the only driver from last year still in the outfit run by his father, Peter Mücke. The team have contested the Super Sports Car League since 2017 and have taken three wins and one pole position so far. The Berlin-based team also compete in the ADAC Formula 4.
How are you and BWT Mücke Motorsport getting along at the moment?
Stefan Mücke: "It's a pity that we can't race right now, because we're very well prepared for the season. We're on tenterhooks you could say, but of course, the current situation is unprecedented and is not just affecting motor racing but life everywhere throughout the world and has even required extreme measures such as lockdown."
How are you at Mücke Motorsport currently being affected by the Corona crisis?
"Well, as regards Formula 4, nothing is happening at the moment, because the cars needed for the ADAC Formula 4 are already finished and ready to go. The cars we raced in the United Arab Emirates at the start of the year are still en route in containers and should be back with us soon. We've already done a bit of testing for the ADAC GT Masters and were actually getting prepared for the official test outings at Oschersleben, but work has obviously had to stop there too. In our classic car division, though, things look a little bit different. As you know, some of our work in this area also involves competing in classic events, which is, of course, out of the question at the moment, but we also have quite a few long-term projects on the go such as vehicle restorations and engine servicing and that is obviously still continuing. It's great that we've got this work in hand and can keep people employed. Once motor racing starts up again, we'll be ready to go and I hope that we'll then be able to complete the programmes we've planned, but the current situation is definitely a tremendous blow for motor sport as well, you know."
Mücke Motorsport intend to field two Audi R8 LMS' in this year's ADAC GT Masters and not three. What's the thinking behind that?
"Well, basically, we wanted to make some structural changes and thought long and hard about how to improve and be better placed. In the end, we came to the conclusion that we would do things differently this year by fielding one car capable of taking wins plus another that is purely and simply a car for juniors. That way, we can focus on just two vehicles, and all the changes we've made so far have felt right."
You'll be sharing the team's main Audi R8 LMS with Ricardo Feller, who is now back at BWT Mücke Motorsport after a year's absence.
"Yes, that's right. Ricardo is an old friend who drove for us in the ADAC GT Masters in 2018. We're delighted to have him back, because he's a good fit with the team. The chemistry is there. Ricardo has made great progress in every year that he's been in the ADAC GT Masters and now wins races regularly. He's come on a lot and has already contested some international events. Also, since Ford have drawn a line under the WEC, I can concentrate 100 percent on the ADAC GT Masters this year for the first time. It's always been a compromise in recent seasons, as you're continually having to adjust to a different car. So you see, we're already thinking in terms of wins here. We are very well placed and should be among the front runners."
Mike Beckhusen and Igor Walilko are new to the ADAC GT Masters and will drive the sister car. What goals do you have for them?
"With Mike and Igor, we've found two excellent drivers who really impressed us in winter testing. Also, they've both done a very good job in the tests carried out so far this year and have shown plenty of speed. With them in the team, we now have two top drivers of an excellent standard who should certainly be able to fight for the Pirelli Junior title. We really do think that we can achieve decent results with our two cars in their respective categories and are extremely pleased with our line-up."
What about plans for the season as regards the ADAC Formula 4?
"Here again, we are very satisfied with our four drivers, some of whom are already quite experienced. We hope that work done pre-season will pay off and that they can even be title contenders. But still, they are young beginners who have really been put through their paces and who have already had their first taste of racing in the United Arab Emirates this winter."
