Racing in the ADAC GT Masters is always close but the second qualifying session of the ADAC GT Masters season opener was super-close from beginning to end. In the end, just one second covered 31 vehicles - no qualifying session in the Super Sports Car League has ever been this close!
For quite a time, it looked like Toksport WRT would claim another pole position. Luca Stolz had been quickest in practice yesterday, and today, his partner, Maro Engel, again took the lead at an early stage with a 1.21.328. His fellow competitors tried in vain to beat his hot time up until the final few minutes of the half-hour session. Just as Q2 was about to finish, Vanthoor set a hot time of 1.21.318 minutes, beating Engel to pole position by a hundredth of a second and securing a maiden pole in the series for himself and his team WRT, who are contesting their first season in the ADAC GT Masters; Vanthoor shares the R8 LMS with Charles Weerts. "It's great to have claimed my maiden pole," said Vanthoor. "But I'm not really pleased with myself, because I didn't quite manage to string the laps together. Still, the car was really great. The team have done an amazing job. Now we've got the race coming. We started from the second row yesterday and then everything went wrong. Hopefully, things will go better today."
Saturday's race winners, Maro Engel and Luca Stolz, had to be content with second place. Porsche works driver Sven Müller came next on the timesheets with a time of 1.21.391 minutes. Müller shares the 911 GT3 R from Precote Herberth Motorsport with Robert Renauer, who is a three-time race winner at the Lausitzring. "I'm mega happy," said Müller. "Ours is the best-placed Porsche. After the no-fault collision in the first race, we were only able to get the car repaired with the help of others and great team work. The crew worked through the night, so third place goes some way to making up for things. The car worked really well. Let's hope now that we have more racing luck than yesterday." Albert Costa Balboa and Franck Perera also qualified on the second row in the best-placed Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo from GRT Grasser Racing. Michael Ammermüller and Christian Engelhart completed the Top Five in the SSR Performance Porsche. They finished Saturday's race as runners-up.
Defending champions Patric Niederhauser and Kelvin van der Linde came sixth in the Rutronik Racing Audi. Towards the end of the session, Van der Linde was on course to be quickest after posting strong split times but lost too much momentum over the final sector to place further up the rankings.
