The only Super Sports Car League campaign contested so far by Sven Müller was in 2017. And the year has left a lasting impression on the 28-year-old from Mainz. It was not only his first year as a Porsche works driver but also marked a strong debut in the series: "I partnered Robert Renauer in a Herberth Motorsport car that season, and we chalked up a victory together at the Lausitzring. The whole year was incredibly enjoyable."
After two seasons in endurance racing, Müller was determined to compete in the ADAC GT Masters again this year: "At Porsche, we are asked which race series we would like to compete in. So I chose the ADAC GT Masters, because as a German driver it's great to be able to race at home. I'm very happy that it worked out."
This season, Müller will again share a Porsche 911 GT3 R with Robert Renauer. And the name of the team is also the same as in 2017, because he has a special relationship with Precote Herberth Motorsport: "I have been friends with Robert and Alfred Renauer for several years. We've actually gone on holiday together. In 2018, I attended the final weekend in Hockenheim to lend the team my support at the trackside. So for me, it's like coming home. The team is relatively small compared to others, but it's just like being part of a family. Everyone goes about their job in a highly professional manner, and they all know what they are doing. I didn't have a single breakdown in 2017. The car was always perfectly prepared and fast. And in addition, we had a lot of fun away from the track, which is also very important in motorsport."
Müller is equally enthusiastic about the race series itself: "The field in the ADAC GT Masters is incredibly high calibre. If you manage to just finish on the podium, that in itself is a mega success. I like the concept of having two races per weekend. I have also enjoyed the endurance races a lot, but it's really cool to have this opportunity to compete in sprint races again, which after all is where I started out." Müller does not anticipate any problems in adjusting to the shorter races: "The starts in the endurance races are now just as aggressive, and there are bumps and scrapes on the first lap just like in the sprint races, because everyone is equally determined to maximise their advantage. So I don't think that I'll need a re-acclimatisation period. I've driven in plenty of sprint races before, for example in the Porsche one-make cups."
A standout occasion for Müller this year will be the August race weekend in Zandvoort, which will take place on a circuit that has undergone extensive conversion to bring it up to Formula 1 standard. "I'm really looking forward to it. The track has some steeply banked corners, which I'm already familiar with from Daytona. It's certainly going to make overtaking easier, and there will be a lot more wheel-to-wheel action. The Most weekend will also be interesting because I've never driven there before. But all the other tracks on the calendar are great as well."
The Porsche works driver is optimistic about the new season and has set himself a clear target: "The ADAC GT Masters has undergone some changes in the past two years. It has got even more competitive, because some very good teams have entered the fray. Herberth Motorsport set a benchmark in 2018 with the title win by Robert and Mathieu Jaminet, but we want to build on that and mount our own challenge for the championship. I think we have all the ingredients for success: our line-up is good, and we will be giving it everything we've got."
