Zimmermann's weekend at Hockenheim went almost perfectly. After clinching his first overall podium on Saturday, the second day of race weekend got off to a promising start. Team-mate Steijn Schothorst confidently took pole position in the number 82 Lamborghini. In an action-packed opening lap, however, the Dutchman dropped back to P5 but improved by one position over the course of his stint. Zimmermann took over the vehicle during the pit stop window and then began to hunt down Indy Dontje's Mercedes in P4. He couldn't find a way past despite putting the yellow GT3 Evo under pressure all the way to the finish line. He had a 0.4-seconds deficit at the chequered flag. In fifth place overall, Zimmermann still managed to clinch victory in the Pirelli Trophy for drivers under the age of 25 as he had done yesterday.
"When you start from pole, you naturally hope to achieve a top-3 result," said Zimmermann. "But still, I'm very satisfied and extremely happy with how the weekend went - especially as this was only my third GT3 weekend. The ADAC GT Masters is incredibly hard-fought and tough, so good results don't simply drop in your lap. Steijn had a good start from pole, but then was pushed off course a little and lost a lot of speed. Unfortunately, that cost us quite a few places. Overtaking was more difficult today, because the track was dirtier. I fought with the Mercedes-AMG, but unfortunately, couldn't find a way around it. Things keep getting better for us at the moment, but we'll all be dealing with a fresh set of cards once again at the Sachsenring."
P2 in the Pirelli Junior classification went to Kim-Luis Schramm in the Montaplast by Land Moptorsport Audi this time around while Porsche driver Jannes Fittje (Küs Team75 Bernhard) also made it onto the podium.
Audi driver Rolf Ineichen hit back in the Pirelli Trophy classification on Sunday after being forced to retire early on Saturday. As his team-mate Mirko Bortolotti had qualified Team WRT's R8 LMS on the front row of the grid, the Italian too was in contention to take a podium until the driver handover. Ineichen subsequently stayed in third position until the finish line. This was his first podium in the ADAC GT Masters, driving an Audi, and his third win in class in the Pirelli Trophy classification in only the sixth race of the season.
"I normally do well at Hockenheim," said the Swiss driver. "I've competed in a lot of races here and have achieved a great deal of success. Mirko [Bortolotti] had a bit of bad luck on the first lap but was able to progress back up through the field again, so it was my job to secure third place at the finish. The scrapping that was going on in the field behind us certainly did us a big favour. It meant we had the chance to pull away a little and bring home a good haul of points."
