No sooner had the first reports of the devastating flooding in the Eifel region started to filter through, than the drivers and teams in the ADAC GT Masters took it upon themselves to help those affected with a number of initiatives.
Maro Engel, whose racing team Toksport WRT is based in the Eifel town of Quiddelbach, joined many fellow racing drivers in launching the platform #WirfuerdieEiefel to collect donations for citizen fund for the municipality of Adenau. Montaplast by Land-Motorsport is also involved in the initiative. “The Nürburgring has given us some fantastic racing – now it is time to give something back! We want to support #WirfuerdieEifel,” said Wolfgang and Christian Land. The team is auctioning off a racing overall belonging to Audi Sport driver Christopher Mies on its Facebook page www.facebook.com/landmotorsport, with the proceeds going to help the victims of the flooding.
Many more teams and are doing their bit too. Callaway Competition are working together with businesswoman Emily Miller for the “RTL Wir helfen Kindern” foundation to organise what is currently the largest privately-arranged aid convoy in the flood zone. It includes six coaches with roughly 400 helpers from the Cologne region, as well as three articulated lorries carrying 50,000 litres of drinking water, refrigerated containers and generates, among other things. Callaway team members are also helping out in the Eifel region.
Phoenix Racing, whose headquarters are very close to the Nordschleife in Meuspath, is another team keen to do its bit. “Team principal Ernst Moser has given us employees time off so that we could travel in small groups to places in Ahrtal where they need help,” said team manager Jean-Luc Tille. “Ernst himself has been transporting patients and helped out at the operations centre at the Nürburgring.”
The Landgraf Group, to which Mann-Filter Team Landgraf – HTP/WWR belongs, is using its fleet of trucks to transport aid supplies and hygiene products to the crisis area. The Zakspeed Mobil Krankenkasse Racing team has made generators and vehicles available. From next week, the team from Niederzissen will also donate the entrance fees received at its museum to the victims of the floods.
