Fastest time of the day for Mercedes-AMG driver Raffaele Marciello

Former Formula 1 test driver Raffaele Marciello set the fastest lap time, at the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, on the opening day of the German GT Championship at the Red Bull Ring.

The driver from Mann-Filter Team Landgraf HTP/WWR, who shares the car with Hamburg’s Maximilian Buhk, clocked a time of 1:29.435 minutes in the second practice session, 16 thousandths of a second faster than that of Porsche driver Mathieu Jaminet (SSR Performance) on Friday morning.

For a long time, it looked as though the fastest time of the second session would go to Porsche. Local favourite Mick Wishofer and Maximilian Hackländer initially took the lead in the MRS GT Racing Porsche, with a time of 1:29.841 minutes. They were then knocked off top spot midway through the practice by Jaminet and defending champion Michael Ammermüller, who went nine thousandths of a second quicker. However, with just three minutes remaining, Marciello landed his Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo on top of the timing list, ahead of Jaminet and Wishofer.

“It is not actually going that well,” said Marciello. “We are struggling against the Porsche, Lamborghini and Audi. I set my best time on new tyres. We will see where we really stand in tomorrow’s qualifying. I hope I can make it into the top five.”

That trio was followed by Rolf Ineichen and Franck Pereira in the best-placed Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo, run by local favourites the GRT Grasser Racing Team. Pereira set a time of 1:29.887 minutes. Fifth place went to last year’s winner Nick Yelloly and Jesse Krohn in the Schubert Motorsport BMW M6 GT3.

The ADAC GT Masters action continues at 09:05 on Saturday morning with the first qualifying session. Qualifying will be broadcast online via livestream at TVNOW.de and adac.de/motorsport.
