As on Saturday, it was Dennis Marschall and Kim-Luis Schramm who won the Pirelli Junior competition again in race two of the ADAC GT Masters at the Red Bull Ring. There was also a double winner in the Pirelli Trophy competition in Austria: Rolf Ineichen.
Dennis Marschall laid the foundations for success with the fastest time in qualifying on Sunday morning. He did lose the lead to the eventual winners on lap one of the race, but he and his team-mate at Rutronik Racing by Tece, Kim-Luis Schramm, consistently put the leaders under pressure right through to the finish. In the end, they narrowly missed out on overall victory by just 0.842 seconds. Second place did, however, mean win number two of the weekend for the Audi duo in the junior classification in the German GT Championship.
“This morning’s pole position was a big surprise,” said Marshall. Unfortunately, we fell a few metres behind the Corvette at the start, but we were able to keep pace nicely throughout the race. The safety car did not help us, as we basically wanted to try to increase the gap to the cars behind us.” Team-mate Schramm said: “The race was not easy. The Lamborghini behind us put us under pressure from the start. However, we were able to keep him at bay. Unfortunately, we did not quite have what it took to attack the Corvette today. The restarts made the race exciting again, but we were able to secure the podium finish.”
Positions two and three in the Pirelli Junior competition were also occupied by the same drivers as yesterday: second place went to Ricardo Feller in the best placed Audi of Montaplast by Land-Motorsport, while Igor Waliłko again finished third in the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo run by the Zakspeed Mobil Krankenkasse Racing team.
Rolf Ineichen and his team-mate Franck Perera were behind Marschall and Schramm for much of the race. In the closing stages, following a late appearance from the safety car, Ineichen fell back to fifth place. However, this was still sufficient for his second success of the weekend in the Pirelli Trophy. “It was a successful weekend for us,” said the Swiss. “We can be happy with seventh place yesterday and fifth today. Franck had a good start and immediately climbed into third place. We did not make any mistakes during the pit stop and came back out in third. I then spent the entire race putting pressure on the Audi in front of me. In the end, the safety car did not play into our hands. We were unable to fend off the strong BMW at the restart. We could do nothing against them, particularly when our tyres cooled down. On the one hand it is a shame that we missed out on the podium, but on the other hand the team did a mega job all weekend. Thank you!”
