Former racing driver Jörg van Ommen and Philipp Zakowski, who is currently joint team principal at Zakspeed, will enter the ADAC GT Masters with a new team in 2022.
The racing team will line up with two Mercedes-AMG cars in the German GT Championship, ADAC GT4 Germany and the GT4 European Series, under the name “Drago Racing Team zvo”.
The team founders need not start from scratch, but can build on a solid foundation. The current team, JvO Autosport, will be renamed as Zakowski & van Ommen GmbH for this purpose. At the heart of the company will be the racing team, which will be involved in multiple racing series. The team’s headquarters is “hangar zero” at Mendig Air Base.
Zakowski and van Ommen Georg have acquired Georg Haub as a partner. The Tengelmann shareholder, with his two companies Drago Immobilien GmbH and TASCO Revisions GmbH, will work with the team to develop its motorsport future. In keeping with the team philosophy, he is seen as an integral part of the team.
While the drivers for the ADAC GT Masters will be announced shortly, the team has already acquired the services of Gabriela Jílková and Robert Haub for ADAC GT4 Germany and the GT4 European Series – a duo that has recently caught the eye on the GT4 scene with some impressive performances. They have already been working with Philipp Zakowski at Zakspeed..
“Jörg and I have known each other since we were kids,” says Philipp Zakowski. “He is an absolute team player and lives for team spirit. The most important thing is that he understands the present day and allows innovative approaches to be taken. I am pleased that we are now able to embark on an ambitious project together. I am particularly pleased that we have been able to get Georg Haub on board as the main sponsor. This is the basis for such a big project, as he suits our philosophy perfectly. WE obviously want to enjoy success in the medium term with our team. As we are able to build on an existing infrastructure, the prerequisites are very good. At the same time, we know full well just how fiercely-competitive it will be in the racing series we will be involved in. For this reason, we will approach our new project with humility and a healthy portion of optimism. It is important for me to stress at this point that there have been absolutely no disagreements with my brother Peter.”
Jörg van Ommen adds: “It is obviously always easy to say that we do not simply want to be another racing team in the ADAC GT Masters and Co. However, we have a configuration for an overall package, which I do not see at any other team. While Philipp has valuable experience on the performance side of things, thanks to his role as team principal in a highly-regarded top team, JvO Autosport has primarily focussed on event topics in recent years. We are now combining our expertise to offer a total package that is more complete than anything I have seen before.”
