Third place overall in a rainy Sunday race is sufficient to earn Austrian Mick Wishofer victory in the Pirelli Junior competition.
Wishofer and team-mate Maximilian Hackländer started the wet race from 18th place on the grid in the MRS GT-Racing Porsche. After switching to slicks during the mandatory pit stop, the duo fought back impressively on a drying track to finish third. That result presented Wishofer with victory in the Pirelli Junior classification.
“We made good progress this weekend with a car that is still new to the team,” said the 21-year-old. “The team and Max did a superb job all weekend and we are very happy with the good result. The start in the rain was really challenging, but we coped well in the Porsche.”
The second-best junior on Sunday was Mercedes-AMG driver Igor Waliłko from Team Zakspeed Mobil Krankenkasse Racing in fourth place overall, ahead of Ricardo Feller in the Montaplast by Land-Motorsport Audi. Saturday’s class winner finished fifth overall, despite a drive-through penalty.
In the Pirelli Trophy, victory again went to an Audi driver. Last year’s title winner Elia Erhart took first place this time, having failed to score after a mistake on Saturday. “My team-mate Pierre Kaffer got us off to a good start,” said the Rutronik Racing by Tece driver. “He did not take any risks, stayed clear of trouble, and handed the car over to me in eleventh place. We stuck with the wet tyres, which turned out to be the wrong choice. I then had to come in again later and switch to slicks. If we had made that switch at the halfway point of the race, we could have done much better. However, we learned a lot and showed potential.”
