Team WRT counting on Audi Sport drivers

Team WRT is putting its faith in two Audi works drivers as it enters its second season in the ADAC GT Masters: Dries Vanthoor (22/B) and Charles Weerts (20/B) will share the wheel of an Audi R8 LMS, which the successful Belgian team is set to run in the German GT Championship. The racing team revealed this news in the latest episode of PS on Air – The Ravenol ADAC GT Masters Talk. The ADAC GT Masters kicks off from 14th to 16th May with the opening round of the season in Oschersleben. New TV station NITRO will broadcast all the races live and in full.

Vanthoor and Weerts lined up together for Team WRT in 2020. They took victory from pole position at the opening round at the Lausitzring, which marked the team’s debut in the ADAC GT Masters. The Belgians are looking to challenge at the front of the field again this season. “We are very excited and looking forward to getting back out on the racetrack and going racing,” says team principal Vincent Vosse. “The ADAC GT Masters is a very competitive and high-class series. It will be tough to challenge for the title, but we will do our best. In our debut season last year, we claimed one victory and a few pole positions, and performed strongly. We are now very motivated to be even more successful. Our goal is to challenge for top positions and the championship again.”

Dries Vanthoor has been racing in the ADAC GT Masters since 2018, during which time he has won two races. He has also been a member of the Audi Sport squad of drivers since the same year. “I am pleased to be driving in the ADAC GT Masters again,” says the Belgian. “I think it is one of the best sprint championships about at the moment. The whole field is so closely matched, it is really good fun. The battles out on the track are also a bit different to those in other series. Last year, we showed that we are very competitive – we won one race and secured a few pole positions, which was a good start in our first season. Now in our second year, Charles and I will be trying to do even better.”

His driving partner Charles Weerts was the youngest regular driver in the ADAC GT Masters field in 2020. On the back of his strong performances, Audi named him as an official Audi Sport driver for the first time for this year. “I am looking forward to the season,” says the 20-year-old. “We learned an awful lot last year, and my goal for this season is to do my best in every race, in order to challenge for race wins and, possibly, for the title. It will obviously not be easy, but let’s see how it goes.”

The racing team will announce the drivers for the second Team WRT Audi R8 LMS at a later date.
