The Audi driver triumphs in Sunday’s ADAC GT Masters race in Zandvoort, taking victory in the Junior classification in the process.
Weerts and his partner Dries Vanthoor started race six of this season’s German GT Championship from pole position and led from start to finish to claim a commanding victory. “I really like the circuit here in Zandvoort and it is nice to have won here,” said Charles Weerts. “The whole weekend has been very good for us, with fifth place on Saturday, followed by pole and the win today. Dries put us in a great position with pole position and his impressive stint. The safety car made it interesting again in the second half of the race, but after that I was still able to open up a nice lead.”
The second-best junior was Igor Waliłko (23/PL) of Team Zakspeed Mobil Krankenkasse Racing in a Mercedes-AMG. He was joined on the podium by the leaders in this class, the Audi duo of Kim-Luis Schramm and Dennis Marschall from Rutronik Racing by Tece.
Lamborghini driver Rolf Ineichen claimed his third class victory of the season in the Pirelli Trophy. Franck Perera, the Swiss driver’s team-mate, had secured second place on the grid in qualifying and handed the Huracán GT3 Evo over to Ineichen in third place around the midway point of the race. He climbed into second place for a short period, before eventually brining the car home in third place overall. “It was very important for me to finish on the podium,” said Ineichen. “Franck did a fantastic job and handed the car over to me in a good position. The Corvette behind me was close for a while at the start of my stint, but I was then able to shake him off and open up a gap.”
