Callaway Competition is taking a motorsport sabbatical: with immediate effect, the successful Corvette team will focus on the new generation of Corvette, the C8 – on the road and then at the racetrack. The team of Ernst Wöhr and Giovanni Ciccone plans to run the Corvette C8 Z06 GT3.R in the German GT Championship from 2024. The new mid-engine GT3 Corvette is currently being developed by GM in the USA, and will be homologated in time for the start of the 2024 season. Until the C8 GT3 is available, Callaway Competition is taking a break from motorsport, during which time it will focus more on improving the performance of and refining Corvette road vehicles. Together with long-term partner Autohaus Kramm in Berlin, the focus will now primarily be on the new Corvette model. Plans include visual styling through to a track day car, into which the team will incorporate its experience gained in motor racing.
“We would like to thank all those responsible in the ADAC GT Masters and, of course, our partners and sponsors who have accompanied and supported us throughout the years,” says Ernst Wöhr. “For now, however, we wish to – and must – go easy on our resources a little and shift our primary focus back to road vehicles. We will obviously continue to keep an eye on the scene and how it develops. We are also currently in talks with General Motors USA and plant to return to the German GT Championship in 2024 with the new Corvette C8 GT3.”
“To make a big jump, it is sometimes good to take a good run-up. As such, we wish Callaway Competition every success with its future projects,” says ADAC Motorsport Director Thomas Voss. “In recent years, Callaway Competition has achieved some impressive successes with the only privately-developed GT3 car. In the ADAC GT Masters, we were always proud to have the only Corvette in Europe competing at this elite level – it will be missed for two years. We are, however, very much looking forward to the return of Callaway Competition and the debut of the Corvette C8 GT3 at the season-opener in two years.”
The Corvette Z06.R GT3 and C7 GT3-R developed by Callaway Competition in a private initiative have won 37 races in the ADAC GT Masters. Callaway has 35 successes to its name, more than any other team. The outfit from Leingarten in Heilbronn won the Drivers title in 2013 with Daniel Keilwitz and Diego Alessi, and in 2017 with Jules Gounon, as well as the Team title in 2009 and 2017. The team can also point to two titles in the Pirelli Trophy and one in the Pirelli Junior competition.
