Trier’s Niklas Krütten is a busy man: The 19-year-old is making his debut in the ADAC GT Masters this season. The former ADAC Stiftung Sport driver lines up for Schubert Motorsport from Oschersleben and will share the brand-new #10 BMW M4 GT3 with Britain’s Ben Green. When Krütten is not fighting for valuable fractions of a second in the ADAC GT Masters, he will be competing in selected NLS races with Schubert as preparation for the 24-hour classic at the Nürburgring. The all-rounder can also be found at the wheel of an LMP2 car for COOL Racing in this season’s European Le Mans Series. In an interview, the newcomer reveals his expectations, goals and preparations.
What do you expect from your first season in the ADAC GT Masters?
From a sporting perspective, I am looking forward to some fantastic battles in one of the strongest GT series in the world. I will be lining up in a new BMW M4 GT3, which is a great privilege. The Schubert team has welcomed me with open arms and I already feel part of the family. As well as the actual racing, I am also looking forward to everything that goes with it. I have not been on live television so often (laughs). I am obviously also looking forward to the fans. They give you a special kick in the car.
What are your goals?
Together with Ben Green, with whom I am sharing the cockpit, we want to finish top of the Pirelli Junior competition. In the overall standings, a place in the top ten would be super. That is our goal. And I obviously also want to gain as much experience as possible. For us newbies, it is perfect to have two very experienced BMW works drivers in the second Schubert car. We can definitely learn a lot from their knowledge, analytical capabilities, and know-how as professionals.
Three series, and three debuts – what are you most excited about?
That is true – well, almost. The ADAC GT Masters is really completely new to me, but I did actually drive in the ELMS and NLS last year. However, that was in lower classes. To be honest, I am looking forward to all three challenges in equal measure. There is a lot for me to learn in each of the projects.
Why did you opt for GT and prototype racing?
I really enjoyed the year with COOL Racing in the LMP3 class, and the prototype class really suits me. We even finished runner-up. Furthermore, the new hypercar regulations mean that many manufacturers from GT racing are now also involved in the prototype class. As an all-rounder competing in both classes, I am simply more versatile and possibly an interesting option for manufacturers and teams when they are deciding on their line-ups.
How have you prepared for such a busy schedule?
I have prepared for the circuits with a lot of work in the simulator. Fortunately, I have a simulator at home and can take to the track whenever I like. For my fitness, I have worked on exercise equipment and gone cycling as often as possible. That is my favourite. Fresh air, natural environment and exercise - perfect.
