Philip Zakowski and Jörg van Ommen are putting their faith in two official Mercedes-AMG drivers in their first season in the ADAC GT Masters.
Strong statement of intent from the newcomers at ZVO Racing: The team belonging to Philipp Zakowski and Jörg van Ommen lines up with an impressive pair of Mercedes-AMG works drivers in its rookie season in the ADAC GT Masters. At the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the team from Mendig will be former champion Jules Gounon and Mercedes-AMG junior driver Fabian Schiller. Gounon is a familiar name in the German GT Championship: He won the title in 2017, and returned to the series last year, when he was still in contention alongside Igor Walilko at Zakspeed right down to the season finale. Schiller is very familiar with the platform provided by the German GT Championship: In 2013/14 he raced in the ADAC Formula Masters, the predecessor to ADAC Formula 4. He has enjoyed success in GT racing for a number of years, and is now set for his debut in the German GT Championship together with ZVO Racing in 2022.
“I am looking forward to returning to the ADAC GT Masters with a good car,” said Gounon in Sunday’s edition of PS on Air – The Ravenol ADAC GT Masters Talk – in an interview with Patrick Simon, during which he revealed ZVO Racing’s plans. “The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is a fantastic race car and we will do everything in our power to bring the title back to Affalterbach for the first time since 2015.”
Schiller is looking forward to his first season in the German GT Championship: “I have fantastic memories of the ADAC Formula Masters. I am looking forward to starting on that platform again, and want to challenge for victories. I get on very well with Jules and, having raced together on the Nordschleife last year, we have become good friends.”
Last week, ZVO and Schiller rolled out the new car for the ADAC GT Masters at the team’s headquarters in Mendig. Now, they begin an ambitious test programme in preparation for the season ahead. Gounon: “We will test at most of the circuits in the ADAC GT Masters and are working with my engineer from last year, Dirk Martin, this season. We won two races together last year and started from pole position on two occasions. The ADAC GT Masters is a tough championship, in which it is important to consistently be at the front of the field. The key to success is extensive preparation with a good test programme, which allows you to sort out various things and start the race weekends with a good basis.”
As well as the ADAC GT Masters, ZVO Racing also fields two Mercedes-AMG GT4 in ADAC GT4 Germany, and recently announced two strong pairs of drivers for this series.
