Ben Green will be on the starting grid for the season-opener in the ADAC GT Masters at the “Festival of Dreams” on 10th June. Together with Filipino driver Eduardo Coseteng, the 25-year-old will be driving a BMW M4 GT3 from Schubert Motorsport. In this interview, the British driver chats about the first races in Hockenheim, what the Pirelli Junior championship means, and his personal objectives.
How was the winter break, and how much are you looking forward to the new season?
When I’m not behind the wheel myself, I work as a driver coach. Helping other racing drivers gave me plenty to do during the winter months. I work with various drivers, the youngest of whom are 13 years old. However, I also work with gentlemen drivers. Our collective aim is for them to achieve their sporting goals and learn how to race. I also competed in an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 at the Nürburgring 24-hour race, which was a really cool experience.
The first season in the ADAC GT Masters was very successful: you celebrated two wins at the Red Bull Ring with Niklas Krütten, as well as topping the Pirelli Junior standings. How did you think that first year went?
I am very satisfied with the results and how we did in the ADAC GT Masters 2022. Our performances were very consistent, which helped me to win the Pirelli Junior championship. We want to make more progress in the 2023 season and I would like to challenge for the title.
Next season, you will be back chasing wins in the ADAC GT Masters with Schubert Motorsport. How important is it for a racing driver to stay with the same team for two seasons in a row?
That makes things quite a bit easier. When I won the title in the DTM Trophy 2021, that was my second season with FK Performance. I think that continuity is the key to success. I enjoy an extremely good relationship with Schubert Motorsport. The team really is performing at the top level. Collectively, we want to be even more successful than last year.
Eduardo Coseteng is your new team-mate. How important is it that you work well together?
In the ADAC GT Masters it is extremely important for the drivers to get on well with one another. Without a strong team-mate, you don’t have a chance at this top level. We have already completed some testing and Eduardo has shown that he has a lot of potential. I am happy to share my experience from last year with him. In the end, I benefit from that. I am already really looking forward to competing and going on the attack with him in the ADAC GT Masters races.
You are already familiar with all the locations for the 2023 season. Does that help?
Definitely! In my opinion, it gives me an advantage over the drivers who are new to the series. I have already raced at the Norisring, winning the DTM Trophy championship there. I have very positive memories of that street circuit.
Which is the most spectacular course on the calendar?
That easy - the Norisring. The street circuit in Nuremberg is unique and driving there is just unbelievable. There are no run-off zones and you are punished immediately if you make a mistake. We are appearing there together with the DTM, which mean that the crowd and event will be massive.
It will be a whole new ball game in 2023: what are your personal objectives?
My clear aim is to win the championship in the ADAC GT Masters. I want to use the experience gained in my first season to record wins on a regular basis. Together with the team and the BMW M4 GT3, we have put together a great package that is ready to win. However, consistency will again be extremely important this year.
The new ADAC GT Masters season starts at the “Festival of Dreams”. What are your expectations for the first race weekend at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg?
The two Hockenheim races last year did not prove to be so successful. The last sector in particular did not really suit the BMW M4 GT3. The team is doing everything to get the car setup perfect for the first two races. It is important to start the year with a good result. Hockenheim is a special location for me in any case, as that is where I celebrated winning the Pirelli Junior title. Without that support from Pirelli, I would probably not be in the ADAC GT Masters in 2023. I am extremely grateful for the material prizes I received from the tyre manufacturer. It is brilliant that they provide so much support for young drivers in the race series.
How does the Pirelli Junior championship winner like to spend his leisure time?
My job means that I hardly have any leisure time (laughs). But I do like to travel and spend time with my family. I enjoy snowboarding in the winter, that’s a lot of fun. I also find indoor climbing very relaxing and I can do that all year round.
To finish up: what headline would you like to see in the 2023 season?
Schubert Motorsport dominates the ADAC GT Masters.
