Christian Engelhart (Team Joos by Racemotion) secured pole position in Sunday morning’s qualifying for race ten of the ADAC GT Masters season. The racer from Starnberg set the fastest lap time of 1:28.432 minutes in his Porsche 911 GT3 R at the 4.318-kilometre Red Bull Ring. Lamborghini works driver Marco Mapelli (I/GRT Grasser-Racing-Team) was second.
Under overcast skies above the Styria region of Austria, and with temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius, the international field in the ADAC GT Masters took no prisoners on Sunday morning, as they battled it out for the front spot on the grid. In the end, it was Engelhart, the 2020 ADAC GT Masters champion, who emerged triumphant and presented his team with its first pole position of the season. “That was a super qualifying session. Michi Joos’ dad had tears in his eyes after this strong result for the team, with the cars finishing first and third. Starting from pole position is very important at the Red Bull Ring. Hopefully I can benefit from the ‘clean air’ on the long straights,” said Engelhart, winner of the Pirelli Pole Position Award.
Mapelli guided his Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2 to second place at the Austrian Formula 1 circuit (+0.367 seconds). The Grasser driver split the two Joos Porsche, with Sven Müller (Bingen/Team Joos by Racemotion) taking third place (+0.381 seconds). The fourth-fastest time of the 20-minute session came courtesy of former DTM race winner Philip Ellis (GBR/Haupt Racing Team) in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 (+0.677 seconds). Rounding out the top five was Mercedes-AMG driver Elias Seppänen (FIN/Landgraf Motorsport). The championship leader in the ADAC GT Masters was 0.719 seconds slower than pole-sitter Engelhart. Sport1 is showing race ten of the ADAC’s iconic GT series live and in full on free-to-air TV from 15:00 on Sunday afternoon.
