The Michael Spacek special prize is considered to be a very special honour in the motocross scene. Each person selected by Goldfren boss Stanislav Spacek for the award has stood out in the ADAC MX Masters not only by virtue of their performance but also by showing extraordinary commitment, by being an outstanding person, by showing fair play and by getting involved with social activities outside of the sport; the primary purpose of the prize is not to reward someone for good results out on track.
Spacek suffered the tragic loss of his son Michael in a motocross race in October 2009 in the Czech Republic and sees this special bonus as a matter of the heart. Since he too was actively supported after his son's accident, the former motocross professional now wants to reciprocate by awarding this prize in return for the help he received back then.
Last year in 2013, it was Niklas Stange from Ratzeburg, who was awarded the Michael Spacek special prize by Stanislav Spacek for the second time. The 19-year-old lost his father Thorsten in May 2005. Herr Stange passed away with a malignant brain tumour after an illness lasting some 18 months. From then on, it fell to Mama Claudia to look after Niklas and younger brother Henrik and make sure that her eldest could continue to motocross despite financial constraints. "My husband used to be a motocrosser and has passed on his love of the sport to the whole family. After his death, it was actually motocross that saved us all and put us back on our feet. I didn't want my boys to miss out on going to the track after what happened to Thorsten, so I asked around motocrossing friends and experts until I finally began to get an inkling of how motorcycles work and started doing small bits of maintenance," said the mother of two. "At any rate, from then on, I was the one who always drove the boys to practice, to courses and to races. I stood in the pits and washed the bike. The cohesion of the whole family unit, that common sense of purpose and mourning for our loss were the biggest incentives to keep going, because through spending weekends together, I didn't lose contact with the kids, even if my boys are a little older now."
In 2010, Claudia and Niklas were presented with the first Michael Spacek special prize in Holzgerlingen. She also received 1,000 euros in cash and two-year's worth of support with Goldfren products. "It really was an incredible help to us and also made Niklas very proud. It allowed my son to maintain his dream and carry on motocrossing."
Then three years later came another call from the ADAC. Michael Spacek had selected the family once again to receive a special bonus. Niklas was no longer in a position to ride due to lack of sponsors, nor could Claudia Stange as sole provider find the necessary funds to enable her son to compete. In December 2013, the young motocross rider received a new bike from Goldfren boss Spacek. "We were unable to ride in the ADAC MX Masters last year, because it was simply impossible to organise things. Herr Spacek had apparently gotten wind of that and had then contacted the ADAC directly about the matter. We were totally lost for words and completely overwhelmed by such generosity. Herr Spacek looks out especially for people who motocross in difficult circumstances and I find that admirable," said Claudia Stange. "Motocrossing has shown my boys that it pays to work towards personal goals and not give up. The sport gives you an excellent foundation in life, better self-awareness and a good attitude when dealing with defeats and setbacks, which is why all three of us love this sport so much, and we are extremely pleased that the new bike enables us to go on practising it."
