Dennis Ullrich wins ADAC MX Masters for third time: Ullrich most successful rider ever in the motocross series

The sky on Sunday morning looked none too promising. The sun had graced spectators with its fleeting presence on quali Saturday but was notable by its absence for the big ADAC MX Masters finale. It was overcast and rainy instead. However, on race Sunday, the constant drizzle eased off soon after the first riders had posted their initial laps of the 1,800-metre Schützenbühlring circuit near Holzgerlingen which belongs to Kalteneck eV. Dennis Ullrich (23, KTM Sarholz Racing Team) was the star rider on this particular race Sunday. The 23-year-old went straight into the lead in both races on his home club's track and quickly made it clear who is top dog at his favourite circuit. Ulle made history in front of 7,200 spectators (over the weekend) by becoming the first triple champion in Europe's most popular motocross racing series.

Having secured three ADAC MX Masters titles, the KTM rider is now one up on Max Nagl (29, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team), Marcus Schiffer (29) and Ken Roczen (22), who have each won the series twice in the past. "I'm just overjoyed and still can't get my head around it. I felt quite agitated before the start, but I was in my element once the starting gate had fallen. The final round here in Holzgerlingen was once again really something, because the track was extremely difficult to master. The less experienced riders were all over the shop, which made lapping backmarkers a real task in itself, but I did it in the end and intend to chill out a bit now," said the new ADAC MX Masters champion who was cheered loudly by the entire KTM Sarholz Racing team, his girlfriend Vanessa, his mechanic Robbie, his suspension technician Rüdi, his mother Brigitte and his brother Sven.

Dennis Ullrich won the daily standings from his team-mate Harri Kullas (24, FIN, KTM Sarholz Racing Team) and Danish rider Thomas Kjer Olsen (19, Bodo Schmidt Motorsports, Husqvarna). Christian Brockel (32, KTM GST Berlin) scored points as the second best German and managed to finish in the Top Five in the championship standings by coming home in fifth position in the final round.

ADAC MX Youngster Cup

Bas Vaessen (18, Team Suzuki World MX2) is the new champion in the ADAC MX Youngster Cup. The Dutchman, who had taken the championship lead during the last ADAC MX Masters meeting in Gaildorf (20th - 21st August) was visibly relieved. The 18-year-old, who had previously won the ADAC MX Junior Cup in 2012 said: "It's party time now. I'm really pleased. Winning this title here means a great deal to me, because it's so important for my future career. The last two laps of the race were absolutely the longest of my whole life and consumed a lot of nervous energy. I rode more cautiously than normal, so as to make sure that nothing went wrong." At the podium ceremony, the new ADAC MX Youngster Cup winner was fêted by his parents Anki and Har, his mechanic Ito and MX legend Harry Everts, all wearing champion T-shirts specially made for the occasion by team boss Thomas Hannecke, who had come to Holzgerlingen to give additional support to his Suzuki protégé. Vaessen intends to line up with the Big Boys in the Masters class in 2017 and will also contest a full season in the MX2 world championship.

Finnish rider Miro Sihvonen (17, FIN, Diga Junior Racing Team, KTM) was second overall, while Stefan Ekerold (21, Bodo Schmidt Motorsports, Husqvarna) took third place on the championship podium. The 21-year-old also took a win in the daily standings. "This is my first victory this season, so I really savoured it, naturally. However, the races were extremely tough today. It was actually more like enduro racing rather than a motorbike race," he told us, speaking about his result. Bas Vaessen was second in the daily standings on race Sunday, while Belgian rider Cedric Grobben (21, KTM Sarholz Racing Team) slotted into third place.

ADAC MX Junior Cup

In the ADAC MX Junior Cup, top favourite Rene Hofer (14, MSC Imbach, Kini KTM Junior Pro Team by Mefo Sport) was delighted to actually realise his dream of a title win. Half points only were awarded, since the youngest entrants in the ADAC MX Masters racing series only raced once due to the tricky track conditions and that race had to be stopped before the end. However, it was enough for the 14-year-old to finish the season on the top rung of the podium. "Actually, today was what you could call the worst-case scenario. It rained, and I had to concentrate really hard. I'm very proud that I'm now also ADAC MX Junior Cup champion after taking my world and European championship titles," said the delighted young talent, who is sponsored by MX legend Heinz Kinigadner (56). Hofer already has plans for next year. Apart from riding in the ADAC MX Youngster Cup as planned, the Austrian will also turn his attention to the European and world championship in the 125cc class. The trophy for runner-up on Sunday was presented to Estonian rider Meico Vettik (13, EST, Mefo Sport Racing team, KTM). The Russian Maksim Kraev (14, RUS, Garim MX team, KTM) was very pleased with his third place at the annual awards ceremony. Hungarian rider Adam Kovacs (13, Team KTM by HTS Mefo Sport) won the daily standings from South African Cameron Dürow (13, GPR Promo MX team by Mefo Sport, KTM) and Rene Hofer.

This weekend, three of the best ADAC MX Masters riders will again compete in the most prestigious event of the year. The Motocross of Nations has been the top meeting of the motocross season since 1947. The 'Motocross Olympics' will be contested by three of the best MX riders from 38 different countries. As in the previous two years, Germany will again be represented this year in Maggiora, Italy (24th - 25th September) by the now triple ADAC MX Masters champion Dennis Ullrich, by Max Nagl, who placed third in the world championship, and by young talent Henry Jacobi.
