18 degrees and overcast – a bad weather forecast for anybody on their summer holidays, but it could not have been better for the ADAC MX Masters riders in Tensfeld, Schleswig-Holstein. After watching the exciting qualifying races on Saturday, nearly 10,000 fans over the weekend were treated to the spectacle of another nerve-wracking meeting on race Sunday. Thomas Kjer Olsen (19, DEN, Bodo Schmidt Motorsports, Husqvarna) benefited especially from his experience as a sand expert on the 1,850-meter deep sand track belonging to MCE Tensfeld eV. Placing second twice, the Dane was pleased to secure victory on the day and was happy to let runner-up, Kevin Strijbos (30, Team Suzuki World MXGP) and the day´s third-placed rider, Arminas Jasikonis (18, LIT, Team Suzuki World MXGP) spray him with the customary champagne. "There many so many big names in the line-up here, it´s just incredible, and the track was tricky to negotiate, so obviously, I´m very proud to secure points here and thus clinch my second victory on the day of this season," said the delighted Bodo Schmidt Motorsport rider, who had earlier in the season finished on the top rung of the podium at the ADAC MX Masters in Fürstlich Drehna. At any rate, Olsen is currently among the top stars on the MX scene and is also on course to become MX European champion. His parents and grandparents made a special trip to Northern Germany to actively support their offspring this weekend.
Race Sunday in Tensfeld ended with a less than satisfactory result for ADAC MX Masters rider Dennis Ullrich. The 22-year-old was unable to repeat success achieved so far this season on the deep sand track and lost the overall lead to Finnish team-mate Harri Kullas (25, KTM Sarholz Racing Team) by placing ninth. Local rider Mike Stender (25, Team Castrol Power 1 Suzuki Moto-Base) slotted into a solid twelfth place after Sunday´s two races but was nevertheless pleased with his outings in his native northern Germany over the race weekend. "The riders here were just so strong. there were plenty of sand specialists among the many world championship riders who had entered. In that respect, I think it´s been a terrific experience and I´m not now left feeling at all frustrated," said the man from Eutin about his performance.
ADAC MX Youngster Cup
The two races in the ADAC MX Youngster Cup were mainly dominated today by Spanish world championship entrant, Jorge Prado (15, ESP, Red Bull KTM) and Dutchman Bas Vaessen (18, Team Suzuki World MX2). In the first race, both drivers went at it hammer and tongs and maintained the excitement until the last second with plenty of overtaking manoeuvres and consequent changes in leadership changes. Vaessen won through in the end and drew past his rivals once more. Initially, however, Race 2 was not as kind to the Suzuki rider. The Dutchman had to work his way forwards again following a skid in the first corner directly after the start. He accomplished the task with flying colours. The 18-year-old even managed to move up into third place in the end. The win in Race 1 and third place in Race 2 helped Vaessen to second place in the standings on the day, ensuring that he maintained his current second place overall in Tensfeld, but he was by no means happy. "I would have liked to have taken the Red Plate home, so I´m a bit disappointed. However, the races were just amazing and such tremendous fun. When the field is so tightly bunched, the adrenaline rush is even greater, you know," explained the Suzuki works rider. In the end, 15-year-old Prado was the winner on the day. He obviously enjoyed his guest start in the ADAC MX Masters in the north of the Republic: "Bas and Miro were very strong opponents. It was a real challenge for me. The organisation of the Masters is really impressive and is a great incentive to every top driver," said the MX world champion from 2012, who also won the title of MX European champion last year. The championship leader in the ADAC MX Youngster Cup, Miro Sihvonen (17, Diga Junior Racing Team, KTM) placed third.
ADAC MX Junior Cup
The Estonian, Meico Vettik (13, Mefo Sport Racing Team, KTM), was the best rider in the ADAC MX Junior Cup. The young KTM rider secured victory on the day with a win in Race 1 and fourth place in Race 2 and was delighteded to narrow the gap on Maksim Kraev (14 / RUS, Garim MX Team, KTM) at the head of the standings and Rene Hofer (14, MSC Imbach, Kini KTM Junior Pro team by Mefo Sport) in second place. The 13-year-old is just three points down on Hofer, so the battle to catch up among the youngest in the Masters race series is hotting up. "I like the track here very much and quickly realised that there´s a lot I can do here. I used that to my advantage and wound open the throttle," said the Mefo Sport Racing Team rider.
Riders will be back in Baden-Württemberg for the sixth event of the ADAC MX Masters, 20th - 21st August, but this time, MSC Gaildorf will organise the proceedings. The club has been named best event organiser in the past three years and has a very attractive 1,554-metre clay track that promises to deliver plenty of action. The race track is set out in such a way that spectators can get a good view of the races from start to finish from any angle. Apart from the ADAC MX Masters, there will also be a press conference in Gaildorf ‘Auf der Wacht´ concerning the Motocross World Team Championship, which takes place this year in Maggiora, Italy (24th - 25th September). Team principal Wolfgang Thomas will officially announce the Team Germany line-up for the MXoN.
