Story about a sponsor: MAGURA: Interview with Oliver Gebhardt, Marketing Manager

What characterises MAGURA?

MAGURA can be described in four words - competent, reliable, Swabian and successful. Competent, because we meet all our customer requirements, are practical and solution-oriented and the personal touch is important to us. Reliable, because we are a versatile team that does its job by dint of hard work and are open to new ideas. Swabian, because we're down to earth and prepared to work on a solution as long as it takes to make it work. And last but not least, successful, because we are a family-run business that first started to make motorcycle components in 1923 and are still OEM suppliers to manufacturers like BMW Motorcycles and KTM, for example, even now in the fourth generation.

What products are associated with the MAGURA brand?

Our company mainly produces hydraulic and mechanical brake and clutch components and systems for motorcycles. We also manufacture high-quality aluminium handlebars, heated grips, hand throttles and radial pumps for road racing.

What makes you indispensable to the sport of motocross?

Our products are of really high quality and extremely durable. We choose our raw materials carefully, which is how we've made a name for ourselves over the years. In addition, the majority of our products are manufactured in Germany. Our aluminium handlebars, developed primarily for motocross to begin with in conjunction with Bernd Eckenbach, are utilised a great deal in motocross. Team KTM Kosak, for example, have relied on them for years. Even Ken Roczen had them fitted to his 65cc and 85cc machines back in the day, and Toni Cairoli as well has ridden with our aluminium handlebars for a long time.

How do you ensure that your products are suitable for off-road use?

Our products are put through their paces and thoroughly tested by professionals of the particular sub-division of the sport in question. The riders know exactly what's important and bring their experience and know-how to bear on new products that we manufacture and market. We also make components in such a way that they are better than they actually need be, so that we can give customers a guarantee that a part is going to be reliable and not break or wear out after being used just once or twice.

To what extent is the ADAC MX Masters important to you?

The ADAC MX Masters is something that is very dear to our hearts, because our experience of the series has always been good and we regard it as a top-class series that we are happy to support. We think it's great that the ADAC MX Masters brings on riders from a young age, turning them into true professionals, ready for an international career, which makes sense and is sustainable in the long term. The series is professionally organised and has accomplished a great deal in the motocross scene over recent years. The Masters is both taskmaster and sponsor, and even someone like Max Nagl or Ken Roczen would certainly not have been anywhere near as successful but for this schooling.

What is so fascinating about the sport of motocross in your opinion?

Motocross riders are heroes on the ground and in the air. The sport is physically very demanding and requires a lot of control and concentration. They ride on the limit basically and sometimes even a little beyond. This means, therefore, that a motocross athlete is meticulous in his approach while being very determined to assert himself at the same time, which is what we find fascinating and worthy of our admiration.
