As a race series, the ADAC MX Masters attracts around 10,000 spectators on average to its racetracks, so interest in the sport is increasing in Germany, and more people are attending every year. However, the press department also exists, whose job it is in conjunction with the local press officers from the host clubs to promote the growth of media interest in the ADAC MX Masters by ensuring that the press, radio, TV and online media carry reports about motocross to a greater extent. In order to generate more attention, press releases are compiled in the run-up to the season as well as before, during and after each race weekend. The press releases include both information about meetings as well as news items about riders, event organisers and the support programme. In addition, articles with exciting background stories and interesting motocross news appear regularly, which, just like the press releases, are then sent out to journalists throughout the Federal Republic via an extensive media distribution network.
Furthermore, the accreditation of media representatives has to be dealt with in advance. Media reps must first register online via a special accreditation portal for the respective event or apply for accreditation to races for the whole season. In both instances, they must submit up-to-date evidence of their journalistic work. If all the documents are in order, then the editors and photographers are sent the relevant documents, including the waiver of liability declaration which they then have to sign and hand in at the press office each race weekend.
With regard to the press office, the organising clubs of the ADAC MX Masters provide a room at every meeting for the exclusive use of the club's press department, of the ADAC and all other media representatives. The clubs ensure that there is a fast Internet connection, enough seats and power sockets, so that everyone in the press room can work in peace and quiet during the race weekend and be able to meet their deadlines. The role of the press department at the circuit also includes supporting journalists by supplying them with results and news from the paddock in plenty of time and providing interviews with Team Principals and competitors. And following on from the weekend, it is also important to keep in touch with fellow journalists, partly in order to receive evidence of their reporting and thus be in a position to determine how well each meeting has been covered, but also, so as to keep them updated throughout the season with news about certain riders from their region and support them by providing a constant stream of reports.
The social media sector is another important area of interest for the press. ADAC MX Masters fans receive regular updates on Facebook both when there is no racing and during race weekends. On the Facebook page, all those interested are kept up-to-date with the latest developments in the sport of motocross, with news about sponsors, technology, training sessions, guest starts, plus snippets from the paddock about weddings, babies and even injuries.
On a side note, in order to ensure that press texts from the ADAC always reach the right people, it is also the role of the press to continually extend their network of contacts and to get new editors interested in motocross. The main aim of this classic piece of PR work is to build sustainable relationships with the media world, so that the respective regional and national journalists will, in future, have the sport of motocross on their radar to a larger degree and report about it more frequently, as the long-term goal is to change attitudes as regards sports reporting and make niche sports such as motocross a more attractive topic of interest for reports on a regular basis.
