Bike ABC: The brakes: We take a closer look at equipment used by the stars

Motocross has the reputation of being an extreme sport with good reason, as competitors ride really hard out on track – big jumps, high speed, plenty of turns. Such demanding conditions require one thing above all, reliable brakes. MX bikes have a front and a rear brake, but they have different functions and, unlike in a car, work independently of one another. The front brake is actuated by a lever on the handlebars and is used primarily when the rider needs to lose speed, especially in fast sections. The rear brake is controlled by a foot pedal on the right and is used on jumps and in tight turns. If, for example, the front wheel comes up too high when setting off, then jamming on the rear brake can compensate for that. In tight turns, pressing the rear brake also makes the rear wheel skid, and the rider can get past the apex of the corner more rapidly.

The company run by former motocross pro Stanislav Spacek is now one of the top brake manufacturers on the motocross scene. GOLDfren make all brake components themselves, sell spare parts and tuning components. The secret of their success, all brake parts are developed by professionals and tested on the track until they are 100% reliable, so GOLDFren brakes can withstand all conditions, impress with their ability to respond precisely at all times and are resistant to both heat and dirt. “The rider must have complete faith in his brakes, even in the toughest conditions. In motocross, dirt and water can soon get into the brakes, which must never in any circumstances reduce their effectiveness. And that is exactly what we can guarantee,” says GOLDFren owner Stanislav Spacek.

The sport of motocross is the Czech rider’s main focus in life. Stani has ridden a MX bike since being very young and even left his homeland to pursue his passion and focus more on his career in Germany. However, he stopped competing actively in 2009 when his son, Michael, had a motorcycle accident, and he has put all his expertise into the testing and development of new brake components day in day out ever since. The ADAC MX Masters has been supported by GOLDfren for many years. After each round of the Last Chance Race, the winners in the ADAC MX Junior Cup and the ADAC MX Youngster Cup receive a set of new brakes, and the Michael Spacek Special Prize is awarded at the end of each season to people in the ADAC MX Masters who have stood out by virtue of their commitment, their performance or their talent.
