Bike ABC: The chain: We take a closer look at equipment used by the stars

No compromises can be made in the sport of motocross where bike parts are concerned. Everything has to be perfectly matched in order to get the maximum out of the MX bike and withstand the toughest conditions, and that also applies to the drive components which consist of sprocket, chain-wheel and chain and determine performance, the ability to respond to the throttle as well as transmit power between drive-shaft and rear wheel.

Each component of the chain-drive plays an important role. Sprocket size determines, for example, the amount of deflection at the front-end. The smaller the sprocket, the greater the deflection. The chain-wheel should be perfectly shaped for the motorcycle in question, so that the chain can run round it. And then again, it is also advantageous where the chain is concerned to have a seal between the outer and inner cover plates of the individual parts, especially when practising the sport of motocross, so that neither water, nor dust or dirt can get into the chain's inner workings and thus significantly shorten its service life. The chain should also have a luber permanently fitted to both improve lubrication and prevent the ingress of dirt, just like the seals.

In order to achieve the best performance when in use, the friction produced by the chain and its rolling resistance must be kept to an absolute minimum. The motorcycle's torque also depends on the chain fitting exactly with minor re-tensioning. Every motocross rider must ensure that all drive-chain components are regularly inspected, maintained and serviced in order to reduce wear as much as possible. However, wear also depends on riding conditions, the weather and conditions at the track, so it's not just the riders themselves who have an effect on the service life of the chain and its capacity to function properly.
