Bike ABC: The exhaust: We take a closer look at equipment used by the stars

Apart from the engine, the exhaust is one of the most important components on an MX bike. It is made up of the downpipe and the rear silencer which together ensure that the exhaust gases produced by the combustion of fuel in the engine are removed properly. At the same time, it is responsible for dissipating heat produced by the engine and for keeping the bike's running temperature as low as possible. It also reduces noise.

The downpipe is directly connected to the cylinder head while the rear silencer is mounted on the downpipe. Their job is to ensure better throttle response and give more torque, increasing the motorcycle's power output. The increase in performance, however, depends to a large extent on the shape and length of the rear silencer. The decisive factor here is its diameter which ultimately alters the engine's power curve and torque characteristics.

Unlike in road racing, power produced in the low and medium rev ranges is particularly important in the sport of motocross. The rider has to accelerate more frequently when off-road due to the nature of the circuits, so it is important to control back pressure in the rear silencer produced by the combustion process in such a way that power is increased. With two-stroke motorcycles, the shape of the exhaust is particularly important, as it contributes significantly to the engine's state of tune.
