Brothers and sisters provide mutual support : Support from the family

Brotherly/sisterly love is something else. They may argue, talk a great deal and get on each other's nerves, but when the chips are down, they are there for one another and take each other's side, especially in motocross. Contestants often bring their brothers and sisters along, and their support is crucial, as is the case with ADAC MX Youngster Cup rider Lukas Kengeter. The 13-year-old from Auenwald in Baden-Württemberg is the youngest of five siblings and has the most exciting hobby, so everyone shows great interest whenever the 'baby' of the family takes part in an international event such as the ADAC MX Masters. "My brothers and sisters all come along, my mum bakes cakes for everyone, and then they all cheer me on for all their worth. That means a lot to me, as I get on really well with all my brothers and sisters and am proud of the fact that as the young 'sprog' in the family, I can get them really interested in the sport I love." While neither of his brothers Fabian (24) or Florian (22) nor his sisters Carina (21) and Jasmin (24) live at home, they are all close by in his hometown of Auenwald. "I'm even going off on holiday with my two sisters," says the KTM rider, adding with a chuckle: "I really like being the youngest. They spoil me a lot, and I can rely on them one hundred per cent whenever I need help, which is a tremendous advantage."

ADAC MX Masters rider Stefan Ekerold is with Team Castrol Power 1 Suzuki Moto-Base. He is also the youngest in the family despite already being 22. Unlike the Kengeters, his brothers Bernhard (23) and Roland (26) are also involved with motocross and even sometimes compete in the same ADAC MX Masters race series as him. "Bernhard and I find ourselves in the same class from time to time, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Whilst competition between us is never an issue, because we're both prepared to give way to one another, I'm clearly the one, who is maddest about Motocross out of the three of us. You see, I'm a pro rider, whereas my brothers both have plenty of other interests." And so, Bernhard is a bit reluctant to pass on tips, as he sees the Masters events as relaxed affairs, while Stefan on the other hand is glad of any pointers his brothers are prepared to give him. "I'm always trying to improve, and, as my brothers both know a fair bit about Motocross, I'm grateful whenever they can help me. I just know that they only want what's best for me and that makes me feel good. Bernhard and Roland are my best mates. We would never go behind one another's backs, as we value family above everything."

In the case of ADAC MX Youngster Cup rider Jeremy Sydow (17), it's his sister Jolien (11), who accompanies him to practically every race. She helps her brother clean his motocross gear and usually goes with him to the pre-start, which she doesn't always find straightforward from an emotional point of view. "I'm generally quite apprehensive, because I usually get quite anxious for Jeremy. I don't find it easy to watch the start," says Jolien, but at the same time, he does a great job in her eyes, and she's full of admiration for him. Jeremy too finds it nice to have his sister along, because they get on well together. "It's reassuring to know that Jolien is there, but she can be hard work at times. When, for example, she doesn't take the dog for a walk when she should or asks too many questions, it gets on my nerves a bit," he says with a nod and a wink to his sister.

ADAC MX Junior Cup rider Nick Domann (14) knows all too well about such situations from his sister Jasmin (8). The two of them get on really well, but from time to time, the Falcon Motorsport rider has to tell her when he's reached the end of his tether. "I take the remote away from her whenever she gives me grief," chuckles the 14-year-old. However, that only happens very rarely, as the two of them get on really well. "Jasmin always wants to sit with me on my bike and ride around a bit. Apart from that, she often comes with me to races and to practice, which I find great," he says, and then goes on to reveal that, in his opinion, no one else in the whole world can get him in a better frame of mind than his sister. Nick: "As soon as Jasmin realises that I'm down, she tries to mess around a bit to take my mind off things. It always works. Plus, she's forever telling her mates about me, and they say 'hi' to me, which I obviously find great."

ADAC MX Youngster Cup rider Ruben Schmid (15) is signed to MX Handel Gibson Tyre Tech Racing, and he, on the other hand, doesn't always have things easy with his three siblings. Despite being the eldest, his three sisters, Patricia (10), Juliana (13) and Katharina (14) constantly try to 'mother' him: "My sisters are forever trying to give me supposed tips. Also, they generally like to come with me to the pre-start to give me another hug. That's nice and all that, but I would rather have a bit of peace and quiet at such times." Still, he's pleased that the girls come to cheer him on and help him clean his things, which is no easy task when all said and done. "Katharina and Patricia both ride motocross, so I too stand by the side of the track and watch them from time to time. We all get on very well, and I think that's the main thing," says Ruben, who really appreciates the fact that his room at home is downstairs and his sisters are on the next floor up, so he often never knows when they're falling out.
