In recent years, KMP Honda Racing Team has established itself as a major presence in the German motocross scene. Team owner Alexander Karg has not only been a successful motocross contestant himself but also runs a Honda MX service and repair centre in Ketsch near Heidelberg stocking a large range of accessories. Of particular interest to all keen motocrossers is that they can get KMP to build them a personal Honda to the exact same specification as one of the team bikes. In addition, there are also a lot of items for fans of the team available from the internet shop at www.kmp-mxshop.de.
A ZAP Moto Minder keeps an accurate record of the operating time of the engine to the nearest minute. An oil change is due after each race and a complete engine service after every 20 hours of use.
The engine of the KMP Honda may look unspectacular from the outside, but the inner workings have been refined to perfection. "The series production engine has been completely redesigned by me," explains team owner Alexander Karg. "Starting with a finely balanced crankshaft, reworked channels, a Wössner piston, modified timing and Vertex ignition control, we've added a lot of extra power to the engine."
The HGS stainless steel exhaust system built to GP specification is in perfect harmony with the KMP-tuned engine. "We have deliberately avoided titanium," explains Karg. "That's because the weight savings are very low, whereas the durability of the stainless-steel version is much higher."
The Rekluse TorqDrive clutch has twelve friction disks instead of the eight found in the series model and is therefore able to transfer much greater thrust. "The friction coefficient of the Rekluse TorqDrive clutch is around 50 percent higher than in the series production version," says the team boss. "Not only are we on the safe side in terms of higher engine performance, but we also achieve significantly longer service life compared to the production version. We have dispensed with hydraulic actuation because of bad experiences in the past and have opted for classic cable actuation."
Due to the higher engine power, Jeremy Delince has gone for a much higher gear ratio with a 14-tooth instead of the standard 13-tooth pinion. This makes it possible to 'draw out' the individual gears, and the engine power is not transmitted as aggressively to the rear wheel.
Sölva forks and shock absorbers have been fitted to all of the bikes used by the KMP Honda racing team, and these are serviced by Sölva after each race. The XTrig triple trees were specially made for the KMP bikes.
The tyres are from Gibson, with the tread varying according to terrain. Thanks to the team's excellent relationship with the manufacturer, they can not only obtain series production tyres but also special factory compounds that are otherwise not freely available.
