The ADAC MX Masters headed to Germany's far north for the second time this season. Qualifying for the ADAC MX Masters, ADAC MX Youngster Cup and ADAC MX Junior Cup 125 took place this Saturday on MCE Tensfeld's reconfigured 1,530-metre circuit in temperatures that reached well over 30 degrees in the summer sun. Track conditions, though, remained good.
Tanel Leok (A1M Husqvarna) set the fastest time of 1:41.501 minutes in the ADAC MX Masters class and as a result, will be the first to select his place at the starting gate on Sunday. "It's been a while since I last lined up in the ADAC MX Masters," said the Estonian with a chuckle; He won the ADAC MX Junior Cup in 2000. "But I have very fond memories of the last meeting I contested here at Tensfeld back in 2001, and there was no need for me to think twice when the chance to enter as a guest rider cropped up. The track was really well prepared despite the heat and I had a lot of fun today, but I'll have to get a good start tomorrow if I'm going to finish up front, because there are a lot of excellent riders here this weekend."
Another guest starter, Harri Kullas (POL Motors/Husqvarna), was fastest in the second qualifying group. The Finnish rider finished second overall in the ADAC MX Masters class in 2016. He set a time of 1:42.676 minutes and is well-prepared for the two races on Sunday. "The heat doesn't bother me," said Kullas. "I've already ridden in the Spanish championship this year and am used to it being hot, but of course, it's going to be tough."
21-year-old Henry Jacobi (STC Husqvarna Racing) currently leads overall in the ADAC MX Masters class but was not happy with his form in qualifying. "I didn't ride well and made too many mistakes. It's as simple as that," he said, annoyed with himself. "It wasn't great but not a disaster either. And anyway, you only get points for the race on Sunday.
In the ADAC MX Youngster Cup, 18-year-old Jeremy Sydow (WZ-Racing/KTM) secured pole position right at the start of qualifying and kept it ultimately. There was something else, though, that ADAC Sports Foundation protégé Sydow was pleased about apart from his personal best time: "To be honest, I've never much liked the Tensfeld track, but I think it's really great now that it's been reworked. The club's marshals also did a great job of watering the circuit despite the heat. Sunday's two points-scoring rounds will not be easy, but I've already had a couple of races this season when it was really very hot, so I think it should go well."
Bastian Boegh Damm (Monster Energy Kawasaki Elf Team Pfeil) set the fastest time in the second group. "I think my best lap was not without error and could have been a little faster," said the Dane. "But the others probably made mistakes too, so my aim tomorrow will be to achieve two finishes in the Top Five, which would be a decent showing for me." Roland Edelbacher (Dimoco Europe Racing/KTM) also turned in a strong performance, as he was just 0.78 seconds slower than Boegh Damm. "Well, I'm not really all that well-known for being a sand specialist," said the Austrian with a big beaming smile. "So, I'm really chuffed, especially as I've only trained properly once on sand this season. At any rate, I'm definitely looking forward to the races on Sunday."
Filip Olsson (Team Diga-Procross/Husqvarna) won through against Emil Weckmann (KTM Junior Diga Racing) and Raf Meuwissen (Raths Motorsports/KTM) in qualifying for the ADAC MX Junior Cup 125. The current overall leader in the standings put more than a second between himself and the opposition and as a result, felt quite optimistic about Sunday's races. "I managed to post a hot lap early on and then just focused on finding different ways of getting round the track for the race," said the Swede. "I really like the Tensfeld circuit. The more it gets bedded in, the better it'll be for me. I'm obviously going for the win tomorrow but will have to keep an eye on my overall lead as well. The big goal is to win the championship." Simon Längenfelder (Pfeil Husqvarna Junior Team) in sixth place was the best German rider in class.
