Introducing Grevenbroich with Schiffer: MSC Grevenbroich's training grounds are set to host the ADAC MX Masters for the first time

Grevenbroich actually has not one but several MX circuits, ranging from a variety of tracks for beginners and children to three full-fledged motocross circuits with a combination of deep sand and more solid ground. Das Loch or The Hole is particularly famous for its sandy passages which attract many international MX professionals and works teams all year round for training and testing purposes. The ADAC MX Masters is held on the 'Sommerbahn', the Summer Track, which has a good mix of sandy soil and jumps that are challenging in terms of riding ability and fitness.

Marcus Schiffer reveals what makes the 'Sommerbahn' so special:

1. SPOILT FOR CHOICE

From experience, it is best to be on the inside at the start in fifth or sixth place in order, hopefully, to arrive first at the fast turn immediately after the start. The inner track can be a little bit faster where it splits just after the extra set of pits, but only if you can manage to take the small double jump cleanly. As they begin to flag, many riders prefer to conserve energy by taking the outside line. And then similarly, just three turns later, they have to decide whether to jump high in the turn and take the next bump in the track as well - which is faster, but much more of a gamble, because getting the direction of travel right can be tricky when jumping - or play safe and cut it short.

2. STAY ALERT

The ruts can get deeper in many places during the course of the day, and you have to keep a watchful eye on the track to see how things are developing. Towards the end, what may have been the fastest line at the start of the race is often no longer your best bet. With three races in one weekend, you have to manage energy resources carefully, for sure. Me personally, for example, I like to relax my arms a little along the straight with the three jumps on the approach to the finish, because there's no way anyone can gain time there. However, it might prove worth your while to expend a little energy on other parts of the track, as you can gain you a lot of time on them in one fell swoop with good riding techniques.

3. KEEP PUSHING

The long right-hander just before you finish your lap is one of the most important sections on the whole track. It can lose you a lot of time. If you make a bad choice of line coming out of the turn and fail to exit with enough impetus, then you will run out of steam on the slightly uphill straight that follows. I try to make my approach as wide as possible and then immediately move hard over to the inside in order to regain momentum as I drift back to the outside so that I'm on the far left of the track for the next jump. Generally speaking, overtaking is tricky on the Sommerbahn and you will find that a smart choice of line and being in good shape physically are paramount.
