Title defence was not easy. Battle with Nagl in Reutlingen was his highlight of the season. Tixier wants to start in the ADAC MX Masters again in 2022.
Reigning ADAC MX Masters champion Jordi Tixier (FRA) defends the ADAC MX Masters title for the KTM Sarholz Racing Team. Tixier started out in Motocross at just three years of age and was crowned MX2 world champion in 2014 with the KTM Red Bull MX2 factory team. In 2018, he won the Motocross of Nations as part of the French team. He contested his first season in the ADAC MX Masters in 2020 with the KTM Sarholz team, winning the championship at the first attempt. We spoke to Tixier about his season and the successful title defence.
Congratulations on winning the ADAC MX Masters title again! Jordi Tixier: “It feels good to defend the title. It was a difficult season, in which all the top riders were faced with challenges. However, I never gave up and always kept fighting. Two weeks ago, I hurt my right hand and did not know whether or not I would be able to complete the season. I did my best and it paid dividends in the end. It feels great to have defended the title I won last year. We are a strong team, which feels like a family, and I am also pleased for the whole crew that we have won the championship again.”
After last year’s “Short Season”, this season consisted of five rounds. Does that make a difference? “Yes, of course. Last season was only very short. This year felt like a real series and there were some strong riders, like Tom Koch, Cyril Genot and Max Nagl. I had to be at my best in every race. I was very consistent and finished on the podium at every event, with the exception of Tensfeld, where I was disqualified in one race. That was tough for me. However, that is part of racing and I am happy to have ended the season on the top step of the podium.”
In you and Max Nagl, we saw two “old hands” take on two younger riders, in the form of Tom Koch and Cyril Genot. “I hope we will see more of that in the future, as it is exciting for the spectators. The final round in Reutlingen, with the battle between Max and me, was very intensive. It doesn’t get any better than that, even if I am a little disappointed not to have won the race. Hopefully we will have a lot more duels like that next season. I would like to line up in this championship again, as it is very professionally organised, features strong riders, and the tracks and organisation are outstanding. Thank you to the ADAC, it is great fun riding here. Hopefully there are many more years to follow.”
How much of a difference did it make to go racing in front of spectators at the racetrack again? “It makes a big difference to have fans at the track. Without spectators, you are really just riding for yourself. The atmosphere is totally different, particularly when you are battling with a German rider. It is far more fun with a crowd. The atmosphere was awesome, particularly at the final two events in Fürstlich Drehna and Reutlingen, and that can actually influence your own riding style.”
You missed out on a few MXGP, in order to start in the ADAC MX Masters. “In the ADAC MX Masters, you can earn good money and do not have to ride for free. We are professional riders and risk a lot. When the world championship calendar changed and there were clashes in the scheduling, I quickly opted for the ADAC. When it comes to my contract, I am also committed to riding for the KTM Sarholz Racing Team in this series – and I obviously wanted to fulfil my obligations. We have worked hard and got the job done. I am very happy with my decision.”
What was your best moment of the season? “That was the battle with Max in race three in Reutlingen. We rode so fast, pulled no punches, and finished so far in front of the other riders. We were riding as fast as the top ten in MXGP. Max is an excellent rider, who is always in contention for the win or a podium. He is very strong, and it does me good to battle with someone like him.”
What are your plans for 2022? It is still too early to say anything definite. I would like to do the same as this year. The ADAC MX Masters is an important championship for me. I would also like to compete in MXGP again. I put a lot of effort into my own team and the sport, but it is fun – I enjoy and live for the sport. I will continue to work hard on myself and believe that I can still improve. My goal is to contest an MXGP season on a KTM, who have helped me for many years, and to defend my ADAC MX Masters title again.”
