Maximilian Spies introduces the track in Fürstlich Drehna

The circuit in Fürstlich Drehna not only has a new date, but has also been given a “facelift”.

The Fürstlich Drehna track was previously known as the traditional venue for the season-opener in the ADAC MX Masters. After a year’s break, due to the pandemic, the date for the race in Brandenburg has been moved to the back end of the season. However, that is not the only change: the circuit in the Lower Lusatia region has been the subject of an update since April 2019. ADAC MX Youngster Cup winner and championship leader Maximilian Spies takes a closer look at the energy-sapping sand track, which also happens to be his home circuit.

“Fürstlich Drehna is a very nice track. It’s location makes it a perfect site for riders and spectators. Parts of the layout run straight through the village, between gardens and windmills. The way the community backs the race and allows it to run so smoothly is fantastic,” says Maximilian. Incidentally, the training track is different to the one used for the ADAC MX Masters, and is more “neighbourhood-friendly”.

“It is a very spectacular track for spectators, with big jumps and good overtaking opportunities for the riders. The circuit offers the crowd a very good view, making it easy for spectators to follow the race. This year, the circuit has been given a few updates in areas that put the riders’ technique to more of a test than the sandy ground already did. New jumps have been installed, as well as elements that are more familiar on Supercross tracks, such as split lanes and even dragon’s backs. This makes it more challenging for the riders, but the track also allows more flowing riding.”

Maximilian is positive in his appraisal of the modifications ahead of the race weekend. “In my eyes, the changes have definitely improved the track. With the new features, it will be very interesting to see what different lines the riders take, as this will also change their rhythm. However, the new layout has retained the spots and elements that were previously so demanding and make Fürstlich Drehna unique, such as the very long start straight. The sandy surface itself makes the track very challenging. This results in big bumps, deep ruts, but also hard braking edges. At this track, it is important to be fit and have a good flow.”
