The Bielsteiner Waldkurs is as iconic as it is challenging, and will ask some questions of the riders in the ADAC MX Masters on 3rd/4th July.
The men from MSC Drabenderhöhe Bielstein e.V. can certainly serve up a real treat. The 1,800-metre track is not only a real looker, but also puts the riders through their paces. Local favourite Lukas Platt describes the track’s features.
Undulating section demands good timing
Bielstein is a beautiful track that is nestled in the natural surroundings. It meanders up and down hill, and the club has added a few modern elements in recent years. For example, there are three undulating sections, on which you can gain a lot of time. While the bumps on the meadow are really simple, it is challenging in the lower part of the track. Shortly after the finish there are five smaller undulations. The fastest way to take these is as a double, followed by a triple jump. Immediately after that, the sweeping Asbi corner awaits the riders. With a lot of speed, you can jump into the bumps and then straight back out.
Step-Up
There are a few good jumps, but the Step-Up in the meadow is probably the most challenging. You are virtually jumping blind and must brake hard as soon as you land, as it is followed just a few metres later by a right-hand corner.
Basic speed and line selection
The key to success at the Bielsteiner Waldkurs is to maintain your basic speed and not brake too hard. You have to keep your speed up in the rolling phases. This is particularly important in practice and when it is dry. In the races, the track is usually ploughed up. That means the main rut is soon extended and you have to look for alternatives. Either you cross the lines or make new ruts.
Bear the watering in mind
An important point is the watering of the track. if it is dry ahead of the event, it is safe to assume that the track has to be watered a lot, in order to keep the dust in check. This is where the previous point comes into play again: as a rider, you should try to stay clear of the extended and hard main rut. You can find more grip on looser ground.
Start
Last but not least: in my opinion, the start is particularly important in Bielstein, as it is hard to overtake here.
